How do you go about extending and renovating..

Hoping for some advice as to what the process is. My dh and I want to have a double storey extension and renovate our home. Where do we start?
We have never done anything like this and have no clue. Any tips on the process and making sure we don't get ripped off greatly appreciated.

We started with getting an architect. Most will give a free initial consultation where you can gauge whether you like their ideas.
