What colour tiles should I have in my bathroom?

I desperately need advice from people who have a flair for this kind of thing. I don't.

I am having 2 bathrooms refitted. One is a fairly normal sized bathroom and will have tiles on 2 of the 4 walls (around the bath, window, basin). The other is huge, and will be tiled all over (apart from 2 floor to ceiling mirrors on the walls).

I have to decide on tiles and am completely stumped. In our old house (small bathroom) we used plain white over-sized tiles and it looked great (I thought). I was going to replicate this, but the plumber was horrified and said it woould look awful - too white, too clinical - as did a few RL friends.

I haven't a clue what would look nice. I'm not keen on mosaics, and I don't like that effect where you have basically plain tiles with a few random patterned ones scattered around. So I'm thinking either plain white (or another colour) with a band of colour around the centre, or the top half in one colour and the bottom half in another? I have no idea what colours are appropriate (MIL suggested black and grey like her bathroom but that looks horrible IMO).

I want a 'luxury hotel' look in the bigger bathroom, but I also want it to be inoffensive and something that would be a selling point; we are planning on moving house in the next 2-3 years.

Help!

Thank you for that. I feel closer to reaching a decision. It will be big tiles in one colour, but I still can't decide between white and stone/beige/of white. I'll go and look at some and hope inspiration strikes.

Definitely grey grouting, not white.

No borders, no feature tiles.

Now I just have to decide on cupboards. New thread to follow....

Just bumping this thread as I'm trying to get my bathroom refitted and need some tile ideas.

Decent sized bathroom that we plan to tile either all over over three walls floor-ceiling. The current tiles are a bit 80's/early 90's with a marble "effect" in the ceramic tile and a geen/gold border and two odd areas with a group of tiles with a pattern on them.

I know that the trend at the moment id for beige coloured tiles but I think that will be too much like the colour that I already have. I've been thinking of grey and white or black and white as well as almost all white but with some bright mosaics either in a border or in the shower enclosure. What do you think?

Oh and what should I put on the floor????
