Which fireplace surround for a modern fireplace in a 1950s house

Every year at this time I get reminded that I would really like to have a mantlepiece on to which I can place christmassy ornamental things and sock for the whole family but alas I still have not done anything about it.

I have not done anything to it in the past as I think our fire place is too modern for a mantlepiece surround and I also don't want to spend too much remodelling the whole thing. It is currently a gas fire that we had capped off a couple of years ago so we plan to board the hole and stick candles and the like in it instead. We don't need the heating from it so no need for another fire.

I really would like to install a surround on to which i can hang things but obviously it cant be too ornate as the house a 1950s quite modern box. Any ideas or recommendations?

Sorry about the photo, i have tried to blurr DD out of it to an epic fail.

Chunky floating timber shelf

Oh yes, that could work! Thank you, SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy.

And it could go with the wood flooring.

I also want to install shelving in the alcoves so i could get the chunky floating timber to match the shelving.
