Living in Lincolnshire Fens

Ljenki1 · 11/12/2018 20:46

Hi I have just accepted a job that will mean working in Long Sutton and Wisbech areas and we are looking to relocate a bit closer to these towns. We currently live in west Lincolnshire near the Leicestershire border.

Can anyone recommend the best areas around here to live, ideally no more than 30 min commute. We also need to be near decent primary school and a nursery, preferably one with holiday clubs.

We have looked at a few of the villages near Spalding and also north of Peterborough but wondered if anyone has any experience of living in these areas? Thanks

Beware of flood risk areas. There’s a lot of them around there.

Yes thanks the low land level does concern me a bit so will be sure to check that out!

Stamford is lovely

Personally I wouldn’t choose to live in the fens (Wisbech, March, Chatteris). However housing is very good value in these places compared to other parts of Cambridgeshire.

Bourne and Market Deeping are OK market towns. Or are they too far away from you? I would personality avoid Spalding; it's dreadful.

heiheithechicken · 11/12/2018 21:46

I wouldn't go Wisbech.

What about surrounding areas - terrington st Clement, Tilney all saints.

You'll get a lot more for your money in Sutton bridge and that side of the river but I don't think it's the best area.

BusterTheBulldog · 11/12/2018 21:47

Stamford is lovely! Not sure if a bit far out for you though?

Ljenki1 · 12/12/2018 07:05

Yes I love Stamford but it's unfortunately a bit far as I want to get travel time down fairly low otherwise I feel like I won't ever get to see my kids :-(.

Bourne and market deeping are also a little bit further than I wanted too.

Crimbobimo what is not good about Spalding?

Definitely not my choice of area to live but job dictates at the moment and like someone said at least you can get plenty of house for your money so hoping that will compensate.
Thanks

In that case Chatteris might be a good choice. Nice architecture, 2 Ofsted good schools (Glebelands primary, Cromwell secondary). My Aunty used to live there and it feels more upmarket than other fenland towns (exc Ely. Which is lovely and more cosmopolitan but I guess too far?)

PurpleFlowersInMyHair · 12/12/2018 08:05

Of course Kings Lynn is close by too - biggest town in area

rockchickchickyrock · 12/12/2018 08:18

Thorney is a nice village and good school, Market Deeping also good - depends on whether you prefer town/village?

Ljenki1 · 12/12/2018 09:08

We ideally wanted to be in a village buy not too far from a town with a train station as my husband needs to travel to London for work quite regularly.

Yes we liked Thorney rockchick just not many houses meeting our criteria at the moment.

Purpleflowersinmyhair unfortunately kings Lynn isn't great for my husbands work but will have a look at chatteris as not looked around there, thanks.

I'm guessing you're not too far from Stamford now?

What's wrong with Spalding..? I personally find it pretty depressing as a place and the shops/town centre have been getting more and more run down. However, houses are cheap and there is the Grammar system should you want it.

Glinton, North of Peterborough? It's pleasant enough.

Ljenki1 · 12/12/2018 13:27

Thanks crimbobimo I haven't driven into Spalding yet. We went to the Springfields shopping centre when we had a drive around and that at least had all the shops you need but guessing that may be the cause of the town centre being run down now. Definitely want to be out of town though so maybe it wouldn't be too bad.

I will have a look at Glinton thanks.

Yes we are between Grantham and Stamford currently. Would move to east of Stamford but that would still be 45min to work.

Glinton, Helpston, Barnack, Thorney & Crowland, THe Deepongs -. Ely is a nice small town but probably too far. Downham Market might be worth it.

If I am honest east of Peterborough is not my favourite area, I prefer north or north east.

rockchickchickyrock · 12/12/2018 14:50

Eye is quite a popular village too, the right side of A47 for Wisbech, quite handy for Peterborough station (one hour from London on the fast train) good school. Gosberton is a nice village on the outskirts of Spalding.

Ljenki1 · 12/12/2018 15:31

Thanks rockchick will take a look :-)

Holbeach? Lived there when my children were young and loved it.

Ljenki1 · 19/12/2018 07:13

Thanks coattails will take a look as that wouldn't be far from long Sutton!
