Removals!

Morning all

We’re moving from one end of the country to another and will have a gap (while we stay with friends) so need our stuff to go into storage for a period of time in the middle. So, we’ve been looking at nationwide removals companies who offer a packing, removals, storage and unloading service.

However, the price we’ve been quoted so far seem very high (£5K+). We’re obviously going to get more quotes. However, we were wondering if it might be cheaper to arrange different companies for different bits of the job – i.e. a local small company to pack and remove our stuff to a storage facility, then perhaps another company to later get our stuff out of storage and drive it to our new house.

Does anyone have any advice or prior experience of this, and any recommendations? We don’t have much precious or breakable stuff so don’t need a specialist service in that regard.

Many thanks in advance for any comments

We paid about the same several years ago so the quote sounds about right.
I'd get quotes for breaking up the service too so you can compare. The storage was only required for one night though. How long is your break with friends as that will obviously make a difference.

Thank you - could be 6-8 weeks storage. Quote so far doesn't actually include storage....

I work in the storage and removals industry and that does sound about right to me. Definitely find the cheapest storage you can, most people pay Big Yellow prices because they need access whilst their goods are in store but if you don't need access you can keep the price down there. In terms of the transport, you're going to be paying at one end or the other as one company is going to have to travel back to it's start point and that's where the costs add up. I'd use a company local to you now to move you into store and then a company local to your new address to move you out of store. Then you'll only pay the big travel time once if that makes sense? If you want to send me a message I can help further and also if you're moving anywhere near where I'm based you're welcome to give us a call and see if we can help.

I'm guessing it would be cheaper then to use smaller companies but will be more of a hassle to organise.
