Is that price decent or too high for a new vaiilant (like for like), plus 1 replacement rad, new copper pipes (ours are wrong size) and a thermostat?

I think it's too high, but can't judge as it's for a Vaillant? 🤔

Agree it seems a lot for like for like. We’ve just paid that for installation of a Worcester Bosch to replace old traditional boiler, including removal of old tanks, new pipework, flue etc.

Thanks a lot guys! I've just got another quote and it was £2,400 (gas-safe engineer) so feeling a bit relieved. It sounds a lot more reasonable! Grin (BTW am in London).

thermostat is prob 500 quid too. Plus the extras. We were quoted 1800 for a vailant, but only 5 years warranty so paid 2300 for an atag one, check the reviews, they are really good, 10 year warranty and meet building regs.

Sounds about right to me. There could be so many different extras the plumber has factored in too. My DH has just done a boiler change that ended up involving a power flush and lots of extras, the job was a nightmare so the price really can depend on so many factors. Very hard to compare one to another.

All you can do is get a couple of quotes to compare, and go with your instinct on who will do the job best! Better still, go with someone recommended to you. Cheapest is rarely the best.

They should all be a 'gas-safe engineer'!!

BetterEatCheese · 23/11/2018 18:51

We paid £4000 for a new boiler, 4 radiators, removal of tanks etc and a heated towel rail. Took about 4 days

It's a good boiler, and in London I'd think a fair price.
If you're looking to save a bit Ideal boilers are well priced and have good guarantees. The customer aftercare is really good too.
Glow worm are made by vaillant but are priced much lower.
Worcester and vaillant are 'higher end' boilers but we've had our Worcester for about 12 years and never had an issue with it.
Aftercare for vaillant has gone down hill a bit recently.
You can get a boiler for £500 but you get what you pay for. I'd avoid vokera and alpha.
Always make sure it's a gas safe engineer and keep your services up to date to ensure you get your warranty :)

Room thermostats are not £500! They are usually around £200.

johnd2 · 24/11/2018 09:17

Room thermostats can be as cheap as a couple of drinks, they're just a temperature controlled switch. screwfix have a well known model that's been on the market 30 years for 15 quid www.screwfix.com/p/drayton-rts8-room-thermostat/46637
And even if you want a fancy WiFi one it's less than 200.

FrangipaniBlue · 24/11/2018 10:01

It depends whether it's a straight like for like replacement or more work involved.

I paid £2.5k 15yrs ago but that was to remove the old style boiler from my kitchen, remove the tanks from my airing cupboard and loft, install new combi boiler in my garage and run in all the new pipes to the house.

If that's the kind of thing you're getting done then I don't think your quote is too high.

But if all they are doing is straight swap out old boiler connect in new one in the same place then that quote use extortionate!

Wavyheaded · 24/11/2018 21:39

All the people I got to give a quote were gas-safe engineers. But the prices they quoted were vastly different. Also, what is it with workmen who come to give you a quote, but then don't bother to send the quote over?! Hmm I'd stayed home from work especially. Had enough of time-wasting builder-people! Wine
