Can you complete on a Friday and move on a Saturday?

We are so close to finalising a moving date!

My husband is desperate to move on a Saturday but I've not heard of this before. Is it possible to complete on the Friday and move on the Saturday?

If so how does it work? As in when would you actually get the keys? Not sure if we need to be discussing this with solicitors or just with our buyers?

If you’re talking about completing on a purchase then yes you can complete on a Friday and collect the keys the next day - assuming the agent where you would collect the keys from is open.

However if you’re talking about completing on a sale and then not moving out until the next day - that’s more problematic as you’d be staying in a house you no longer own, and there’s a chance the people purchasing the house you are selling won’t be very happy with that!

Some solicitors May prefer not to aim for Friday completion btw as any hold ups or issues can push things into the following week

Jappydooda · 20/11/2018 13:33

It depends on what you mean by "move".

I completed on a Friday and the house was all packed up and ready to go by lunchtime (completed at 1pm and handed the keys to the new owners as they turned up on the doorstep at 12.45pm).

Then drove 230 miles to the new house and got the keys and stayed with a relative overnight near the new house.

The lorry came on Saturday and I moved into the new house. I had to pay an extra £20 for a Saturday unload, which was fine.

So, yes, you can "move" on a Saturday.

Not sure if we need to be discussing this with solicitors or just with our buyers?

Wait, so you're selling your house and want to move out a day after it is completed?

No, you can't do that, and don't ask to! As soon as it is sold it's not yours, so you'd be living in someone else's house overnight and odds are they won't be up for that...

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/11/2018 13:36

I completed on a Tuesday and moved on the Friday. We were in rented so it was easy and it gave us a few days to get the new house clean.

LadyFlumpalot · 20/11/2018 13:36

Depends where in the chain you are I think. We completed on a Friday and didn't "move in" for another week as we were bottom of the chain and moving from rented property which we still had the lease on until the end of the month. As previous posters have said, entirely depends on your circumstances, once you complete the house is yours and if circumstances allow you can move in whenever you want.

FluffyMcCloud · 20/11/2018 13:38

You can’t move out a day after you complete as it isn’t your house anymore!

Mondaytired · 20/11/2018 13:41

Are you in rented at the min or are you part of a chain?
If you think whoever is moving into yours will need to move on the Friday ..... as in the day of completion it’s their house.
So unless you are in rented then nope not possible

ForgivenessIsDivine · 20/11/2018 13:44

Nope. .. once you complete on your sale you need to move out. When you move in to your new property is up to you.

In theory, could you ask your buyers to move the following day... maybe... but no solicitor would advise this.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 20/11/2018 13:45

I would never complete on a Friday again! We had a nightmare. Buyers were meant to be out in the morning (exchanged first thing) but I think it was more like 8pm we got our keys off them so we could go in Shock

Of course, solicitors and estate agents were closed by then.

CottonTailRabbit · 20/11/2018 13:45

Why would your buyers let you live in their house for a day?

What's so special about your DH that his life doesn't support a Friday move?

You could buy your new place a week early, so say you exchange on Fri 1 the sellers move out, Sat 2 you move in, Fri 8 you complete with your buyers and they move in. Of course this only works if you can get a bridging loan for the middle week.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/11/2018 13:46

Well yes, if your stuff as gone into storage before completion. You can then move it into the new house whenever you like.

Penguinsetpandas · 20/11/2018 19:48

We have done this but either renting in one or owned both, you basically need to be owning both or renting one and owning other and have an overlap. You can't just complete and not let your buyer move into next day, well not unless they are doing BTL and let you rent it from them but doubt they would do that for one day.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/11/2018 19:50

As above, if you are only buying you can move into your new house whenever you want to after completion.

If you are selling, you need to move out on completion day.

Watto1 · 20/11/2018 19:56

Your removal firm will probably be able to pack up your stuff on the Friday, store in overnight in the van and unpack in your new house on the Saturday. We did this when we moved from one end of the country to the other. There simply weren't enough hours in the day to pack, travel for 7 hours and then unpack at the other end.The removals firm were fully insured to do this and our stuff was in their secure depot. We stayed in a Premier Inn overnight.

DiveBombingSeagull · 20/11/2018 19:59

You can’t stay in the house you’re selling after completion. You have to complete with vacant possession.

xyzandabc · 20/11/2018 20:00

You can move in whenever you want after completion. However you must be moved out when the completion happens as someone else will then own the property, you can't stay after completion.

ShotsFired · 20/11/2018 20:03

Your husband sounds like he thinks he's the first person to ever have the brilliant idea of moving on a weekend Grin

I imagine nearly the whole universe of people who have completed on a Friday would advise against. With the people who completed on a pre-BH Friday being the only louder voices.

The sheer stress of hoping your transaction completes before 5pm is crazy.

Just pick an earlier weekday get it completed with ease and stay in a travelodge for a couple nights if he is that fixed on moving on a weekend only.

Bluesheep8 · 21/11/2018 05:29

As long as you vacate the house you're leaving at the agreed time on completion day, you can move into the new one whenever you want. As pps have said.

WhiteDust · 21/11/2018 05:58

You have to move OUT on completion day. You can move IN whenever you like.

WhiteDust · 21/11/2018 05:58

...after completion of course!

dismum90 · 21/11/2018 07:10

Thanks for the advice everyone Smile
Hubby got the idea as a friend of his next week is apparently completing on the Friday and moving in the Saturday and are in the middle of chain but now I think maybe he has mid understood his friends situation or they may have things in storage for one night or similar.
At least I have some ammo to go back with now and I may even suggest the Thursday like that advise from posters on here!

Friday completion - wouldn’t recommend it. Ex conveyancing solicitor.
