Experts on north-ish Yorkshire- 2nd home suggestions?

HottestChoc · 18/11/2018 07:36

Considering a 2nd home purchase in Yorks partly for holidays but also going back to my roots and to be near family further north. I know the Dales and some villages to the west of York, further north, but we want to keep our journey to 3 hours if possible (from north of London.)

Any ideas for somewhere quite rural, but with a bit of village life, but with easy-ish access to York itself ( like 30 mins) and the east coast.
Not asking for much!

Hi I've just bought a holiday home in the Dales, but will be using it as a holiday let and renting myself. For 3 hours from London by car you will need to look further south- have you tried the Peak District? We were tempted by there but had a reason to buy in the Dales

Malton! It's Yorkshire's food capital, is very conveniently located in between York and the east coast and york is 2 hours on train from London. It's a gorgeous part of the world - think brideshead type of scenery

prettywhiteguitar · 18/11/2018 07:46

Please don’t buy a house and leave it empty and unused for most of the year. This is why house prices are through the roof and locals can’t live where they work

HottestChoc · 18/11/2018 07:51

prettywhiteguitar Sorry but I didn't come asking for opinions like yours.

We will be retired. Our children and friends will also use it. We will split our time between n/s not that it's any of your business. Confused

Malton- no, don't like, sorry.

Peak District- we've holidayed there for years. We can get to York in 3 hours- I've done the N-S drive for 40 years.

Peak District is second choice but we want access to the coast and somewhere more north to be near family.

You can't tell people how to respond to a post.

huggybear · 18/11/2018 08:03

How on earth are you getting from London to York in 3 hours?!

Svalberg · 18/11/2018 08:13

By train, I assumed! It's 2.5 hrs from Euston to Oxenholme (for Kendal) so about 3 hrs to Yorkshire with the journey into KX/StP sounds about right.

ClashCityRocker · 18/11/2018 08:18

York is between 2 to 2.5 hours on the train, depending on what train.

I would maybe look at the villages to the north of York.

Easingwold is a pretty Georgian market town and there are lots of smaller villages round that way.

About half an hour into York, easy access to the coast, dales and moors.

MaryThorne · 18/11/2018 08:21

There are various nice villages south of Harrogate (although pricey for Yorkshire so it depends upon your budget).

HottestChoc · 18/11/2018 08:22

huggybear I didn't say I lived in London. I said 'north of London'. It's Hertfordshire and 15 mins from the A1M.

I said no to Malton as it's a town not a village. Looking for somewhere rural.

I also know Easingwold (I am a northerner hence the desire to have a base there.)

I'm more interested in the area west of York towards Harrogate which I don't know very well.

huggybear · 18/11/2018 08:22

Oops, I hadn't considered the train, sorry.

prettywhiteguitar · 18/11/2018 08:27

Yes I’m afraid you can’t tell people how to respond on a public forum.

Again think of the impact on the local community of buying a second home. York and the surrounding area is affected by this practice and living so far away are you really going to use it so much?

Hairytangerine · 18/11/2018 08:29

Knaresbouragh?

HottestChoc · 18/11/2018 08:30

Pretty- it's something I have thought about. I appreciate your point but it's not exactly what I asked for. I have explained the circs as much as I feel I want to - but I don't appreciate you telling me what to do with my life. Houses are there for anyone to buy. I'm not stopping a local buying a home if they can afford it.

Knareborough is a town. I am looking at small rural villages.

OP posts:
PickAChew · 18/11/2018 08:34

If you know the area, why are you having to ask on here, then sneer at other people's responses. I would assume that someone saying Knaresborough would include the villages around there.

How about you use a map and rightmove?

ComeOnComeOnComeOnGetThroughIt · 18/11/2018 08:35

What PickaChew said. Or you could stay down south.

Hairytangerine · 18/11/2018 08:39

Crackpot?

Scatteredthoughtss · 18/11/2018 08:45

Too bad if you don't like the answers. You are spectacularly naive if you don't think buy a second home means taking a first one away from somebody else and pushing up prices. There's a housing shortage.

WorldParty · 18/11/2018 08:51

Get lost. We have villages ruined by people buying holiday homes

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/11/2018 08:52

You're being a bit rude to the people who are actually trying to help op.
When someone says a town in answer to your question it is reasonable to assume they mean 'villages in the vicinity of'. We're not stupid up here, you know Hmm

Babdoc · 18/11/2018 08:56

Not only does this price locals out of the housing market, but once the number of holiday lets reaches a critical mass, you lose all the local facilities. Village shops don’t have any trade from houses left empty all winter, so they go out of business. Ditto pubs, post offices, churches, primary schools, etc etc.

theboxofdelights · 18/11/2018 08:59

Bishop Monkton lovely village, two pubs, lots going on. Skelton on Ure is ok, pub not worth going to. Kirkby Malzeard, West Tanfield, Grantley all nice but maybe over three hours.

jellybean85 · 18/11/2018 09:09

Well yes I came to suggest villages in and around Knaresborugh but I'm not going to sit and list them all. There are some stunning but expensive villages between York/Harrogate/Lees.
Hope you're attitude comes across better in real life though, villages are small places, trust me I've lived in a few. People who come across so snippy and impatient in real life rarely stick around Grin
