Experts on north-ish Yorkshire- 2nd home suggestions?

HottestChoc · 18/11/2018 07:36

Considering a 2nd home purchase in Yorks partly for holidays but also going back to my roots and to be near family further north. I know the Dales and some villages to the west of York, further north, but we want to keep our journey to 3 hours if possible (from north of London.)

Any ideas for somewhere quite rural, but with a bit of village life, but with easy-ish access to York itself ( like 30 mins) and the east coast.
Not asking for much!

@Arkengarthdale - Arkendale is a village west of York close to Knaresborough so the poster probably did mean Arkendale...

Arkengarthdale · 19/11/2018 18:19

MissKittyCat so it is! Arkendale and Ferrensby. I remember the signs off the A1 😄

@HottestChoc Seriously. You're still displaying monumental lack of self awareness.

prettywhiteguitar · 19/11/2018 20:06

Why are you talking about Cornwall I don’t understand ? It’s not the only place to suffer second home ownership and frankly it’s worse that you are looking for a home 10miles radius around York as that’s precisely what people type in when looking for a home who commute in to work.

You can make all the excuses you like but you are contributing to elevated house prices for families and couples trying to buy in the local area

HottestChoc · 20/11/2018 11:44

There are an awful lot of posters here who clearly know nothing about the housing market but like to think they do. They are also very quick to mention my tone but seem oblivious to their own Hmm

I have been looking at 2nd homes ( note- homes not a holiday cottage to use 6 times a year and / or rent out as a business) for years.

I suppose you also despise people who buy a house and rent it out, depriving locals of houses? Oddly, I've never seen any outrage here when they ask for advice !

Many of those I've had my eye on have not sold in a year or more. The prices are dropping and the actual percentage increase in homes in the north is very low and sales are slow. They are also well within the price range of many locals. One reason for the price hike around York is that people now commute to London daily, and also they have moved out of London so they have money to buy larger properties.

I had barely got the phrase '2nd home' on the page when a few posters waded in with their view on how I ought to live my life or spend my money, without knowing a single thing about the circumstances. It smacks of envy rather than genuine concern.

Any vendor selling a house has the choice of who to sell it to. If it's on their conscience that they only want it to be sold to locals, they can decide to do that.

People were incredibly rude here when they knew nothing about my circumstances. If you don't agree with people having 2 homes, fine, but this is not the place to come along and berate people who ask for advice on locations. Do you really think it's going to make any difference?

Thanks again to the posters who offered advice.

Oh OP, you are going to get on with those Yorkshire folk just fine.

There's a lovely village called Farrend Overfirk. I suggest you move there.

FaFoutis · 20/11/2018 12:33

Surely that is the definition of a holiday cottage. There is plenty of outrage about landlords on MN too.

'I suppose you also despise people who buy a house and rent it out, depriving locals of houses? Oddly, I've never seen any outrage here when they ask for advice !'

I think you must have been reading a different Mumsnet to the rest of us!

SasBel · 20/11/2018 12:39

Saltburn and surrounding areas are worth a look.

SallyWD · 20/11/2018 12:53

Knaresborough is gorgeous. I love Grassington too. Stunning scenery and in the heart of the Dales. It has lots of lovely cafes etc and a good community feel to it. A great location if you like walking.

AgathaRaisinDetra · 20/11/2018 13:12

There's also a nice village called Farkarthtathassend Ovfirk. Katie Hopkins has bought a holiday home there. You could be such sweet friends.

theboxofdelights · 20/11/2018 13:20

Wow, some of these posts are not very generous are they!

The OP is after somewhere to buy so that she can spend half of the year near her 90 year old parent.

allmycats · 20/11/2018 13:25

I don't think you will get a village WEST of York that will fit in with your 1/2 hour drive to the coast - it can take that long to get round York on the A64 on a 'not too bad' day. If you could go North of York you would probably like Rosedale, Hutton-le-Hole, Helmsley, Egton Bridge, Grosmont areas. These have quite good access for Scarborough up to Whitby coastal area.

Justalittlebitblondie · 20/11/2018 14:46

I think you need to review your knowledge of the local property area as well - I live in this area and prices are actually rising quickly for houses which have no issues - those loitering usually have compromises. And to confirm - in my village you would be regarded as a holiday cottage owner and people do get annoyed - people who aren’t living here all year round do make the community less sustainable as they don’t contribute to the basic infrastructure e.g. using a basic village shop regularly (not just once in a blue moon when they are here) and enabling the local school to have enough pupils to be sustainable. It isn’t just high end butchers and greengrocer which need support. Obviously this doesn’t bother you else you wouldn’t be sniping but thought you should have feedback from someone who does live in the area as to how you will be perceived...

somewhereovertherain · 20/11/2018 21:46

Please just stay in London and stop ruining the villages in the North.

Thanks to people like you we have no village school, no village pub and no village shop as nearly 50% of houses are 2nd homes or holiday let’s.

And the prices are nuts.

LovesLaboursLost · 21/11/2018 08:09

Haha at her buying somewhere to be near her elderly parent. She’s not buying in the NE pit village where they live, is she? She’s buying an hour and a half a way in an area with a second homes problem.

What about Howden? 30mins south of York? It's on the Hull trains line so easy travelling!

Tiscold · 21/11/2018 08:49

How about buy a house in your parents village?Shock

AgathaRaisinDetra · 21/11/2018 13:09

Skipsea is nice. Close to the sea, plenty of cheap property. I don't think the locals will mind that it's your second home.

WomanWithAltitude · 21/11/2018 16:24

I love Grassington too. Stunning scenery and in the heart of the Dales. It has lots of lovely cafes etc and a good community feel to it.

Why do you think that is? Oh yes, that's right, because a community of people lives there! In other words, it isn't dominated by second homes.

It's hard to believe people are really this blind. Buying second homes in villages with a 'good community feel' is what ultimately destroys (or at the very least reduces) that community. It's easy to say one second home won't make a difference, and have good intentions about contributing locally, but the reality is very different.
