Experts on north-ish Yorkshire- 2nd home suggestions?

HottestChoc · 18/11/2018 07:36

Considering a 2nd home purchase in Yorks partly for holidays but also going back to my roots and to be near family further north. I know the Dales and some villages to the west of York, further north, but we want to keep our journey to 3 hours if possible (from north of London.)

Any ideas for somewhere quite rural, but with a bit of village life, but with easy-ish access to York itself ( like 30 mins) and the east coast.
Not asking for much!

Oh dear, have NRTWT 😎.

Fucking hell ‘you’re not stopping a local buying a house if they can afford it’. You’re making it less likely that they can afford it. Just admit you don’t give a shot about that and that you think your desire to have two houses is more important than their desire to have one.

theboxofdelights · 18/11/2018 09:21

I think the flaming is a bit unfair tbh, I live in a place that has a high number of holiday homes in the area the OP is looking at. And yes, I paid almost as much for my house here than I did near Cambridge, but, that is not just because of folk buying second homes is it.

Location (it isn’t grim up north), attractions, Dales, Moors, earning potential in places like Leeds, fantastic schools, etc., etc., all contribute to house prices/availability.

Just as a matter of interest, OP, in real life, do you often find yourself perplexed at people "taking you the wrong way"?

HottestChoc · 18/11/2018 09:30

Fucking hell ‘you’re not stopping a local buying a house if they can afford it’. You’re making it less likely that they can afford it.
So please explain your argument...

Supply and demand comes down to a LOT of factors, not just people buying another home. Prices in the national parks are higher because they are nice places to live.

Cme on- I haven't said people take e the wrong way. I said I wanted ideas for villages to the west of York and rural. People suggested towns. I explained I was from the north and knew lots of areas - inl Malton and Knaresorough- and they weren't on my list.

You are making any argument for the sake of it.

Arkendale ?

ZenNudist · 18/11/2018 09:36

Woah! Really aggressive posting style given the subject matter and perfectly reasonable, not rudly put comments. Its a bit early in the thread to be telling people to fuck off. Could you try to play nice? You might get the advice you seek.

ZenNudist · 18/11/2018 09:37

^rudely

ComeOnComeOnComeOnGetThroughIt · 18/11/2018 09:37

OP you've been rude and now people are piling on

FYI If I asked people in RL for suggestions on where to live they might offer suggestions based on what I'd said.

They would not start suggesting I was morally corrupt for wanting to buy another home.

I have done nothing wrong on this thread. I am annoyed that some posters have started swearing and taking me to task for wanting to buy a home.

This forum is PROPERTY. If you don't like threads like this, on 2nd homes, maybe start your own somewhere else.

It's not me that started the bun fight and you can hardly start having another go at me because I reacted.

ZenNudist It wasn't me who started the nastiness.Maybe read the thread???
I was taken to task by a couple of posters who said I ought not to buy a 2nd home. and who waded in with their opinions.

I am not going to engage further. Thanks to all the people who gave ideas.

If you want to be between York and the coast, and have access to the train line then the villages around Malton should tick those boxes. Have a look at Terrington, Hovingham and Sheriff Hutton for bigger villages with pubs/shops etc. Or if you want smaller villages try - Leavening, Westow, Burythorpe, Marton, Crambeck or Welburn.

Chickencellar · 18/11/2018 09:40

I think the point was prices are high in National Parks but pushed even higher by second home owners. It's an emotive subject especially if you are local and are stuck unable to buy a house , no surprise to have opinions like this.

ChimesOnSundayMorn · 18/11/2018 09:43

Its not unreasonable to point out that rural North Yorkshire communities are being damaged by houses being empty for large chunks of time. And it does up drive house prices thus pricing out local people on lower wages.

Sorry if that isn't what you want to hear. But it's the reality.

LovesLaboursLost · 18/11/2018 09:49

It’s pretty basic supply and demand that if some people want two of something where there’s usually one each, demand will outweigh supply and prices will rise. Fine if you’re comfortable with that, but don’t pretend you’re not doing it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/11/2018 10:17

Op has already ruled out Malton area.

huggybear · 18/11/2018 11:00

North of London is a bizarre phrase if you don't mean North London. You could be in Leeds.

Justalittlebitblondie · 18/11/2018 12:24

I live near there, used to drive down to Hertfordshire a few times a week - honestly you are talking four-ish hours... also houses in the area you want - the golden triangle - and expensive, especially if you are after something cute as opposed to more modern or functional

Justalittlebitblondie · 18/11/2018 12:25

Also from west of York to the coast is well over an hour...

Villanellesproudmum · 18/11/2018 12:27

I had to go to a place called Nidderdale recently for work and thought it was a very pretty place, has tourists, walkers etc so could work?

Roystonv · 18/11/2018 12:32

If you know something about the area then why not narrow it down to a few specific villages and then ask specific questions (and improve your tone) but you will not do west of York to the coast in 30 minutes.

theboxofdelights · 18/11/2018 14:01

Nidderdale is lovely Villan. I lived there until this year when I moved a couple of miles out of the dale. Absolutely tons more tourists after Tour de Yorkshire and Cote de Lofthouse!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/11/2018 14:11

I have thought about the second home issue quite a lot recently as I have found myself in the position where I could buy a second home. I love the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales and would love to live in either place but my kids are still in secondary school and I have ageing parents here in the north west.

I looked into holiday homes and decided against it for all the ethical reasons given. However, if DH and I were retired, i would be thinking of buying there and living there full time. I can’t see the appeal of moving backwards and forwards all the time. Do you have ties in Herts, OP?

The ethical dilemma speaks for itself. I’m glad there are rules in place in the Lakes to restrict a lot of properties to local people only.
