I'm just in the middle of buying a house and have just paid for the searches to be done, whats next after this? Once they come back do you exchange? Also how long roughly is it between searches and exchange? We've already had the survey and valuation done and have the offer from the mortgage lender

It completely depends! The searches can take a couple of weeks, then your solicitor will probably raise some questions, and the vendor solicitor can take ages to reply - it really is a case of 'how long is a piece of string', but if you want to speed the process up, keep in regular contact with your solicitor and keep in their case.
