Why does nobody want to fit my carpet ?! :-(

I’m in NE England and have been trying to find a carpet fitter for a month!

It’s just to fit a stair runner up one flight of stairs .... we have the runner but need underlay etc.

I’ve sent emails to all the fitters on the NICF website , posted and an on my-builder, asked friends if they know anyone .... no response.

Do you think it could be because it’s the Xmas run up ? Or maybe a small job nobody wants ?

I need to get stair gates on (screw fit ones) and was waiting until the carpet was fitted before doing so.

Is there a national shortage of fitter a or are stair runners notoriously awful to fit ?

I even phoned two big carpet shops but was told they only fit their own carpets!

Anyone in the NE know a carpet fitter ?!

Most will only fit their own carpets. It's quite rare to have not booked it in when you bought it. It's just not a service most people need. Maybe post on your local Facebook group and get a handy man with carpet fitting experience.

We bought the runner online from carpetrunners.co.uk - no fitting service ! Thanks, I wasn’t sure if a handy man would do it x

Not rare round here in the NW. We've paid carpet fitters to fit carpet we've bought a number of times. Ring instead of emailing would be my advise.

Advice

In my experience they like to provide everything as they can make a commission on it. But there definitely are people who will fit as have used people for fit only before. I would second posting on your local Facebook selling page. I needed a plumber for a tiny job the other day and I know if I had rung around I wouldn’t have got anywhere. But posted about 6pm and had a pipe capped off by 9.30 the following morning. Def worth a post.

Fitters are usually paid by the metre. Stair runners are fiddly without many metres so usually at the back of the queue.

My other half store manager carpet shop

Its a shit job no one wants only think that swings it is if you brought carpet from them.

Im in same boat with kitchens.
I want an ikea kitchen official fitting extortionate but getting independent fitter that touch it tricky

Fitters have a minimum charge round here because smaller rooms, etc can be fiddlier than big ones so I think you have been unlucky. We got a carpet fitter for our dining room via ratedpeople. I know lots of people recommend you don't use that kind of site, but it worked for us.
