Hello !
DH and I are very keen to move to a village on the Trans Pennine train route between Manchester and Leeds to run our little house sitting and dog day care business now that we've retired from the commercial rat race that we were part of for 25 years !

We had a mini break with the doggies in Marsden last week and fell in love with the area -amazing scenery and so well connected to either Manchester or Leeds for a bit of culture and retail therapy!

We are veering towards Slaithwaite over Marsden because of the converted mill that will be a new retail /office space .Anyone know through the grapevine when phase 1 of this due to open please and any local feedback on the good or bad side of moving to Slaithwaite or Marsden would be wonderful please??

Following with interest as we're also hoping to relocate to this kind of area soon!

Best decision we've ever made Smile

Jane obviously comes highly recommended we will phone her for a meeting when we are next coming up .

I've heard one side of the valley gets more sun than the other anyone know which side please ?

Wrt to the trains, they've changed that recently so some of the faster trains stop at Slawit instead of just the once an hour slow train

Bluesheep8 · 21/10/2018 10:27

I've never heard of one part getting more sun than another to be honest...

Kitty1996 · 22/10/2018 12:52

that's really good news thanks for sharing!

It could be an urban myth! a friend of ours from Huddersfield who had cycled in the valley said he'd found one side was wetter than the other but he couldn't remember which!!

Hey! How are you getting on with the hunt? We’re moving to Slaithwaite hopefully soon just going through a house purchase. Moving from Manchester City centre! Bringing a dog and as we work we would probably use a doggy care!

Hi sorry for late reply just seen your message and we are just back from visit to Slaithwaite!

After lots of decorating and DIYing house finally going up for sale start of May and we plan to rent first in the area until a house comes up for sale.
Think your dog will have lots of playmates ...the area is really doggy -met a lovely lady whist we were on day trip walking there this Monday, who wants us to come and house sit for her two hounds and mind chickens whilst she's on hols!
Our existing clients gutted that we are moving away since there aren't many people like us who do house sitting or doggie day care where we live!
What kind of dog do you have -we are dog mad -ours is a rescue mini schnauzer!

Hello all, Thought I'd say hello as we are hoping to move to Slaithwaite with my spaniel, and very interested to see what the doggie community is like. We've actually made so many friends because of the dog where we live now. He'd also need some daycare/dog walking!
Hoping we like it, having lived in cities or down south a bit we've become a bit smashed-avocado/flat whites. (we are disgusted at ourselves, if that helps Wink)

Bluesheep8 · 01/05/2019 19:14

dogmum there's plenty of smashed avocado and flat white to be found in this beautiful valley, should you want it! Our local pub is more often than not full of walkers and their dogs and all are very friendly and happy to chat (the owners too!) We relocated 3 years ago (DP from the area originally) and it's the best thing we ever did.

Thanks bluesheep! We have spotted a place we quite like on Meadow lane (having never thought about a new build before, I love the position of this one, right by the fields). I’ll potentially be freelance then or between jobs so will have plenty of time to explore the flat whites of Slawit Grin looking forward to it!

Bluesheep8 · 02/05/2019 12:50

dogmum oooh I'll have to have a nosey at meadow lane now! Smile

Bluesheep8 · 04/05/2019 07:07

Just remembered that we looked at a house on Meadow Lane, it's lovely and quiet and as you say, near lots of fields. We decided on an old house in the end though. Also, I can highly recommend Ashbys and Vanilla Bean cafe for great food. Have you looked at Marsden or Meltham?

dogmum1 · 21/05/2019 12:34

Yes actually we are considering Marsden too - keen to be close to a train line so DP can commute to Leeds/Manchester without driving.
Slaithwaite seems a bit more happening (Places like Om, Rumpus, the wine bar etc)... but Marsden seems to present a few more house options for us. What's community spirit like in Marsden? We'll be trying to make new friends! x
