Help finding an area please!

My DH and I are looking to a) buy our first home together and b) start a family. We're struggling to find an area that would suit us whilst also suiting our budget...
We currently live in a Hertfordshire market town- good area, low crime, good schools, parks and woods, lots of restaurants, pubs and coffee shops (although admittedly not much else to do). Sadly we have just had to pull out of buying a house here; it needed a lot of work but the survey threw up some major repairs and the vendors wouldn't budge on the price.

We're continuing our search but are looking at other areas now that we both work in London and don't get much for our money here. We're struggling to find an area as for every positive review on a place there is a negative one.
DH's family is in the Bromley area, mine are in the same town as me but happy to move. We'd like to be a bit closer to DH's family in Bromley, not too far from Heathrow airport and will commute to London daily.

We would like a house near(ish) the station, ideally 3 bedrooms (but flexible) and up to £400/450,000. Schools aren't an immediate issue but will be in the next few years. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would we have more luck finding a wild unicorn?

Dorking or Reigate maybe? We briefly considered Dorking, but decided to settle near to the IL's in Bucks in the end.

Dorking is really lovely though. My friend lives in Dartford and loves it there. Bexleyheath too, but I don't know much about those places. Good luck!
