Does anyone have a bio-ethanol fire?

And if you do, does it heat your room? We can't use our flue so are looking at other options, but have heard that the bioethanol fires don't actually heat the room very well...

Would love to hear any views of them, good or bad!

Following as we are in the same boat!

Never heard of a bioethanol fire, but surely, if you are burning hyrocarbons you need a flue to take away the CO2.

I did loads of research on these as I have no possibility for a flue. The general feeling is that they are great centre piece, but provide virtually no heat. The bioethanol is also quite expensive in the end I decided no.

Lonecatwithkitten - I am really interested in them - not bothered about the heat - just for decorative use - can you point me to any good websites?

@another20 there was a previous thread on MN ( can't link as on the ap) and also on MSE.

I used to have a table top one that we took camping to put on the table and gaze at drunkenly. It was very pretty but gave off no heat at all really.

My neighbour has a couple and I can’t stay in the room for longer than 30 min, they give me a headache.

borntobequiet · 07/10/2018 21:21

Not much heat either, btw.

Think of the condensation,.....

Could you have a balanced flu gas fire? They just need an outside wall and can look really lifelike, with flickering flames and good amount of heat.

Daisy2990 · 08/10/2018 10:35

My friend had one for about a year and has now replaced it with an electric fire. The bioethanol didn't give out much heat. Also, I think there are minimum requirements for the size of the room due to the emissions they give off.

It was mounted pretty much at my toddler's eye level and the front was clear plastic and stuck right out from the wall. I was forever having a heart attack that he would walk into it without seeing it, or fall into it and break the front.

I thought they looked cool but now I've seen one in action, I wouldn't bother.

Thank you so much for the replies - if anyone has time to reply about which particular ones they had I'd be v interested to know how much you paid and whether they were a particular kw strength etc...

Scary as we are about to order but I'm really put off now!!
