Would you buy a house without a bath?

Dh wants to rip out the bath & just have a nice big shower room, but I’m not convinced - at the moment we have a shower but it’s just one of those above the bath thingies. Another issue is we might sell up in 10 years when youngest flown the nest, so don’t want to do anything that might make house hard to sell.

Thank you.

No, a bath is essential, a shower not so much

That's a matter of opinion.

opinionatedfreak · 06/10/2018 21:31

I've just had this deliberation.

I've decided to keep the bath but for me. I don't use it much but when I do fancy a bath I want to be able to have one (usually about once a year!).

I am reducing the size of the bath though as I want a bigger shower cubicle.

thismeansnothing · 06/10/2018 21:39

I did. Nearly 9 years later and one DC later I don't miss having a bath at all. Nice big shower all the way

LittleBLUEsmurfHouse · 06/10/2018 21:43

I don't get this thing about having young DC means you must have a bath. Babies can have a baby bath on shower floor and young DC who want a bath can have a paddling pool in there (that's what my disabled bro did when his son was younger and sometimes wanted a bath) and both of those are easier than leaning over the side of a bath imo. My DC have had showers from 6months old anyway (being held until just over 1yr old, when they would just stand in the shower.)

I hate that I currently only have a shower over a bath.

A pp said a bath is essential, a shower not so much but I completely disagree it's the ability to shower that's essential, not the bath.

seven201 · 06/10/2018 21:47

It wouldn't put me off but I would put a bath in within a month of moving in! And if there was another house I liked that already had a bath I guess I might pick that one. We did buy a flat with only a shower in and did fit a bath in.

Your bathroom will be tired in ten years anyway, so it's probably not a big issue. Just do what you want.

redsummershoes · 06/10/2018 21:49

yes
baths are pointless imo
and as po say - in 10 years the bathroom needs replacing anyway...

pallisers · 06/10/2018 21:55

We re-did all our bathrooms recently and the only reason I kept the bath in the main bathroom was re-sale. The teens who use it would far rather I had put in a large shower. No one has had a bath in our house for about 8 years and I doubt anyone will ever have one again. I have a lovely big wonderful shower in our bathroom. Guests have a shower too.

If I were going to be in the house for 10 years and it was my only bathroom, I'd have the bathroom I wanted - not the one the next owners wanted.

Kintan · 06/10/2018 21:58

I’m really surprised at all the posters saying you’ll need to redo a bathroom every tens years anyway - surely bathroom fittings and fixtures are made to last longer than that!

useyourimagination · 06/10/2018 22:01

Yes, as long as there's room to put one back in if I wanted to.

SenecaFalls · 06/10/2018 22:03

Can someone please tell me why a bathroom needs to be replaced in 10 years? I am posting from inside a 15 year old bathtub filled to the brim with bubble bath as I type. It looks and functions pretty much the same way it did the day we moved in 15+ years ago. So do the other bathroom fixtures. We haven't even replaced the shower head. Also it's all white, no weird or dated colors.

anniehm · 06/10/2018 22:05

No, to be honest a bath and separate shower is on my must have list. Does depend on size of house

BackforGood · 06/10/2018 22:24

No bath would be a real negative for me

Like all things in looking for a house, you weigh up all the pros and cons. I'd not say I wouldn't buy a house without a bath, but everything else about it would have to make the hassle of changing the bathroom / putting the bath in, as well as the cost, would have to be balanced by other things being good.

However, if you are thinking of maybe moving in 10 years or so, I'd do what suits you now, I wouldn't live with something that wasn't my choice for 10 years+

pallisers · 06/10/2018 22:30

yeah, have to say the bathroom needing to be done in 10 years is a bit of a shock to me too. I did mine last year and hope never to do them again :)

Ontheboardwalk · 06/10/2018 22:33

Surfer do you use the bath?

If you do then tell your DH to do one. I love my bath and it would put me off a house nit having one.

If you don’t use the bath then rip it out. You could always look to put a bath back in if/when you want to sell in 10 years time

HelloViroids · 06/10/2018 22:34

Ideally no - as said upthread, might do if looked easy to put a bath in, but not if configured in a way that would be difficult. However, if you’re not looking to move for ten years that’s a long time to keep house in a condition to sell...

lifechangesforever · 06/10/2018 22:35

Never

sdaisy26 · 06/10/2018 22:38

If a house didn’t have one I would factor in cost of adding one to my offer. But for a move you may be making in ten years I wouldn’t really worry about what other people want.

SpaceDinosaur · 06/10/2018 22:54

No

We just bought a house and I point blank refused to view houses without baths... yes I know it's possible to spend a few thousand changing a bathroom after you've moved in but bathrooms and kitchens are apparently the rooms you sell your home with and I didn't want to spend hundreds of thousands on a house which needed thousands spending on a bathroom

Pinkprincess1978 · 07/10/2018 00:03

I would. We didn't have a shower in our old house, we do in this and I've only had two baths in 2 years. As long as you have s method of washing that's what's most important.

Funny people saying they would buy without a bath, we lost a sale because we didn't have a shower.

HeddaGarbled · 07/10/2018 00:05

No

Kamma89 · 07/10/2018 04:04

Nope. Love an occasional luxury bath. To all you posters saying a bathroom needs replacing every 10 years may I suggest you buy better quality and more timeless pieces! That's a crazy waste.

EdisonLightBulb · 07/10/2018 06:36

I love a bath, would miss mine but if it was a starter home I wouldn't buy without one for the following reasons:

My first two up two down house was just that. Our first house, we had no money for new bathrooms and ours was burgundy! We had our first child there. You do really need a bath with little children. The house sold to a single man, who had money behind him and ripped all the bathroom out. We couldn't have bought that house with just a shower it didn't work for us.

I guess it's where you are in the house chain is what I'm trying to say.

Now, with money in our pockets I would buy an empty shell or a complete doer upper, because it's not a big thing to put it right. Now.

Are you limiting your market with just a shower?

SpoonBlender · 07/10/2018 07:30

We put in an extra large bath under the wallmount shower when we redid our bathroom, mostly it acts as a giant shower tray but once in a while one of us uses it for a soak. Wouldn't be without.

PurpleNailVarnish · 07/10/2018 07:58

No.

AdoreTheBeach · 07/10/2018 08:02

No. Wouldn’t buy it unless truly sensational house/plot/location AND priced low so I can have £ to redo to add a bath

I love a soak and redid our bath to include a huge tub I can lay down fully in (separate shower). Bath seemed pretty crucial raising kids too.
Plus the bath is used for a lot of other things (dog washing, washing larger things in the house etc)
