Would you buy a house without a bath?

Dh wants to rip out the bath & just have a nice big shower room, but I’m not convinced - at the moment we have a shower but it’s just one of those above the bath thingies. Another issue is we might sell up in 10 years when youngest flown the nest, so don’t want to do anything that might make house hard to sell.

Thank you.

I prefer showers but it's hard to bathe babies/toddlers without a bath, so I wouldn't tear out the bath if it's the only one in your house.

Bluntness100 · 06/10/2018 16:16

Yes I would.

SweetheartNeckline · 06/10/2018 20:54

Yes I would and have bought a house with no bath. We had a 3 year old and a 1 year old at the time. Quoted cost of about £1000 to put one in the existing bathroom, but we put an en suite bathroom in elsewhere instead. I would have exactly the bathroom / shower room you want now if the plan is to stay for 10+ years.

MakeAHouseAHome · 06/10/2018 20:57

I don't like baths and would far rather have a larger shower. So for me a house without a bath would be a plus!

ThomasHardyPerennial · 06/10/2018 20:58

Absolutely yes!

Zigazagazoo · 06/10/2018 20:59

Yes. We did. When we do bathroom, we’re just going to put a bath in. No biggie.
Personally I wouldn’t rule out a pretty much perfect property because it doesn’t have a bath.

FairyPenguin · 06/10/2018 20:59

Yes I would but only if the bathroom was big enough so a bath could be put back in at a later date.

SputnikBear · 06/10/2018 21:00

No, I need a bath for DC and I enjoy a weekly bath myself. It’s too much expense and hassle to put a bath back in. If I did buy the house I’d bargain down the price to account for installing a bath.

DramaAlpaca · 06/10/2018 21:00

I wouldn't, even though I rarely take baths. I still like to have one in the house in case anyone fancies a good soak.

My friend has a large house with three bathrooms, all of which have showers and not baths. I just think it's a bit odd, but it works for her family.

Mum2jenny · 06/10/2018 21:00

No, a bath is essential, a shower not so much.

C0untDucku1a · 06/10/2018 21:02

No. But if youre planning on staying for ten years youll need a new bathroom anyway at that stage.

C0untDucku1a · 06/10/2018 21:03

I dont have baths but the children do. I would worry it would alienate young families.

Paddingtonthebear · 06/10/2018 21:09

We rent a 3 bed detached “family” house that has one quote small bathroom. No bath. They put one of those shower cabin things in instead. I don’t like having baths, I am a shower person. But I wish we had a bath and shower. Much easier to wash kids and dogs! The shower cabin is also not very tall inside due to being a shower cabin (has lights, radio, steam jets etc). It’s not all that tbh. Looks better than it is. Our small family bathroom is also black from floor to ceiling, Christ only knows what they were thinking.

A580Hojas · 06/10/2018 21:11

I would. I haven't taken a bath for maybe 10 years (although we do have one here). But I think it is a deal breaker for some people, especially families with young children.

Singlenotsingle · 06/10/2018 21:12

Yes, provided there was room to put a bath in somewhere. We've got 2 bathrooms, both with full-size baths. (One's got a shower cubicle as well, for DP)

Dickybow321 · 06/10/2018 21:14

It would obviously put off people who can't afford to put a bath in if they need one, but as PP have said if you're staying for ten years it is your house so do whatever the hell you want.... it will need a new bathroom in ten years anyway and will be priced accordingly.

SmellyHead · 06/10/2018 21:14

No, I would really miss being able to have a bath so I wouldn't buy a house without one. Even if the shower was the most luxurious possible, it couldn't come close to having a bath.

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 06/10/2018 21:15

I’d buy it as long as you hadn’t made structural alterations that meant there was no longer space for a bath. And if the bathroom was 10+ years old then I’d be redoing it anyway, even if it had a bath tub.

Dickybow321 · 06/10/2018 21:16

Paddington it didn't stop you going for the house though

MsSquiz · 06/10/2018 21:16

We did, our current house. We have a very small family bathroom with just a shower, toilet and basin in. We have 3 en suites all with showers. We are planning to knock the family bathroom and 1 en suite together to make a large family bathroom with a huge bath, shower, toilet and basin, but that was factored in when we bought the house. This house was significantly cheaper than the price we sold our old house for

SweetheartNeckline · 06/10/2018 21:16

If you plan on it being your home for 10 years, its resale value / potential should not even an issue tbh. If it went on the market and you struggled to shift it, put a bath in then, or reduce the price, or redo the whole bathroom.

I do find the obsession with resale-ability weird with (relatively inexpensive fixtures and fittings in) houses; no one would live with a pair of jeans, TV or car they disliked for a decade just on the off chance it'd resell better than what they loved.

SenecaFalls · 06/10/2018 21:19

No. I love taking a bath. Plus, at least here in the States, at resale, you would usually be limiting your market to people who do not have young children. And while most people are willing to do a bit of cosmetic work to a bathroom, I have never been in a buy and sell situation where people were prepared to do major renovations to a bathroom.

Racecardriver · 06/10/2018 21:20

Yes. I would pick a big shower over a bath but no proper shower.

SenecaFalls · 06/10/2018 21:22

I'm amazed at people who think you have to put in a new bathroom every 10 years. That would put me already five years behind schedule.

Redglitter · 06/10/2018 21:25

I hate baths. I'd love a proper walk in shower. Unless you're thinking of selling in the next year or so which you're not, do what suits you. Not some in the future possible buyers
