Help! Radiator leak has caused stain on brand new carpet

I am sick and tired of my new house. It is one thing after another.

Despite paying for the heating/ radiators to be tested, the first time the heating went on the radiator leaked. All over my brand new, wool Crucial Trading carpet.

It has dried, but left a huge stain. I am so upset.

I decided not to get stain guard on it because I read that it is a waste of money. I should have got it.

I could cry. I also had a new stair carpet which had bleach spilt on it by a guest (it is rented out on Air BnB) The cleaner didn't tell me, so I have had no way of claiming for it.

I am ranting now I know...

2 brand new expensive carpets ruined in 8 weeks.

Do you have home insurance cover for accidents?

loveka · 03/10/2018 16:11

Yes. My partner thinks it isn't worth claiming as the premium will go up.

This is the third thing that has been not worth claiming though!

If it's not worth claiming for two brand new expensive carpets, there's no point having the accidental damage cover. What's he holding out for, someone accidentally demolishing the house?

loveka · 03/10/2018 16:16

I think he is! Drives me nuts.

I guess if we can get the stain out then that would be better than claiming.

"Yes. My partner thinks it isn't worth claiming as the premium will go up."

He is wrong. I agree with Shatners that it isn't worth having insurance if you aren't going to use it. That's what it is there for. If the premium goes up it will go up by less than the cost of a new carpet.

If it's a rust stain it will be a mare to clean.

wowfudge · 03/10/2018 17:27

I'd get a professional carpet cleaner in to treat the radiator leak - their equipment is much better than anything domestic and I doubt there is a stain they haven't seen.

If the stain won't come out were there any off cuts left, when it was fitted? If so a carpet fitter can easily remove a small area of stained carpet and replace it without it being visible that it was done. But it needs to be a piece left over from the roll used in your house as the colour varies between batches.

loveka · 03/10/2018 18:33

Yes, I have an off cut! Brilliant, thanks.

I thought it would look obvious, but it seems not!

It does need to be done by a good fitter to not show but definitely worth it with a nice new carpet and an obvious stain. My mum and dad have had it done before and even knowing where the replaced area was you couldn't tell at all.

If I have got this right (that you Air B n B?), then the wear and tear on your carpet and property will be high. You should consider good insurance.

loveka · 04/10/2018 09:10

Hi MrsPatmore. I have good insurance. As I said, my partner doesn't want to claim on it. He thinks our premium will end up costing more, adding up to more than the cost of the carpet.

I'm just interested to know why you assumed I didn't have any insurance?
