What's this frame around the light switch?

We moved recently, and the new place has some dodgy cosmetic DIY to sort out. This light switch is in my kitchen and it has some sort of backing plate to it. It's been painted over with the same paint as the badly lined walls. Am I right in thinking it is just some sort of old fashioned decorative feature? Is it likely to be made of wood? Does it have a name?

I have an electrician doing a few jobs for me later this week, so I was thinking of asking him to remove it. Will that be easily done, i.e. just a case of loosening the switch, prizing of the frame, then re-attaching the switch? Could we potentially do it ourselves?

It looks just like wood trim tbh. Would need a bit of plastering sorting out around it once gone. Why don’t you scrape a screwdriver over it to see?

I think that has been done to make a modern plastic light switch look more like a pattress.

That's a wood trim and it looks like the sort usually saved for glazing doors.
How odd..

I think the switch park is too deep for the back box. Instead of getting a slimmer switch, they have frames the switch to fill the gap.

Beading for door and window frames.

This one needs a 25mm back box so if it is that, this one will probably go in.

That’s an ugly bit of bodge, isn’t it :( Reminds me so much of some of the joy we found in this house when we first moved in.

TokyoSushi · 23/09/2018 20:53

I think it's just trying to be erm 'decorative' cover up some sort of bodge job

That's a dog's breakfast, that's what that is.
