Good quality combination boiler

I'm having a new combination boiler installed and the plumber has turned up with a Glowworm Ultimate 3 (we're a small family in a 4 bed, 2 bath 20 year old house).

Apart from the fact that I'm sure we didn't discuss that brand, I'm concerned that it's a bit of a budget brand. I don't mind paying a bit extra for quality, so is there a decent boiler I should be insisting on?

We'll be staying here long term so want to get it right. Previously had a Worcester Bosche in our old house which was great: 8 trouble free years. @PigletJohn any ideas?

The install is next week so I have time!

Just had a new Vaillant fitted and it’s a revelation. All the plumbers we asked to quote recommended Worcester Bosch or Vaillant. Apparently they beat all other brands for energy efficiency by a country mile.

If you were to look at this month's Which, you'd see their top three are Worcester Bosch, Viessmann and Vaillant, scoring 86%, 83% and 80%.

If you look at the manufacturers' websites you may find that some of them give longer warranties if installed by someone on the Approved Installers list.

Glow-worm is described as "average" with a score of 54%

I'm getting a new boiler installed soon. Have chosen a Worcester Bosch

ShirleyPhallus · 21/09/2018 12:31

Just out of interest can anyone give he prices they were quoted for installation of these?

EmmaC78 · 21/09/2018 12:34

I always get Worcester Bosch. Never have any trouble with them.

Arborea · 21/09/2018 14:39

Thanks all so much, I'll be sending him back to get a Worcester or Vaillant.

Vaillant and Glowworm are the same company. Glowworm is marketed as the lower end.

BertyFlanter · 23/09/2018 08:51

Worcester Bosch, with all the filters and controls to extend the warranty. WB customer service is amazing. 10 years peace of mind on a boiler in invaluable 😀

Ginmakesitallok · 23/09/2018 08:55

We're looking for a new system boiler. One supplier has recommended a Navien (as well as vailliant, Worcester or Viessmann), but all the reviews I can see are rubbish. Does anyone know what which are saying about them???

Iamnuts · 23/09/2018 09:06

I've just had my old Worcester combi replaced and all 3 quotes were for the same model of Worcester Bosch and all prices for installation within pounds of each other. It is a fantastic upgrade and am delighted (testing the heating this weekend!)

PigletJohn · 23/09/2018 09:14

"Does anyone know what which are saying about them???"

Not listed as far as I can see.

Why wouldn't you get one of their top three brands?

Ginmakesitallok · 23/09/2018 10:20

Just wondered what was being said about navien as the bloke was so complimentary about them, but the general reviews were rubbish.

4yearsnosleep · 24/09/2018 19:56

We're getting a Valiant, new hot water tank and Magna Clean for £3,800 with a 10 year warranty

4yearsnosleep · 24/09/2018 19:57

Oops not combination 🤔

DragonMamma · 24/09/2018 20:00

We are about to have a new one installed and are probably going to go for a Viessmann Vitoden 100 or an Ideal Vogue C40. There’s only £60 in it. The Viessmann has better reviews but the Vogue has a slighter higher flow rate 🤷‍♀️

DragonMamma · 24/09/2018 20:02

Whoever ask about price, I was quoted £2400 and £2340 and this includes a condensing pump and a chemical flush.

PigletJohn · 24/09/2018 20:22

The Viessmann 100 is a high-quality boiler, and (if fitted by an approved installer) has a long warranty.

DragonMamma · 24/09/2018 21:30

He’s Viessmann accredited and also Which? Trusted something or other! Comes with a 10yr warranty as you’ve mentioned 👍🏻

PigletJohn · 24/09/2018 21:43

I've got one.

DragonMamma · 24/09/2018 21:44

If you’ve got one and like it then I’m definitely going with that! Is it quiet? We have a system boiler at the moment and it drives me crazy (it doesn’t help that it’s above the living room).

PigletJohn · 24/09/2018 23:18

mines a regular boiler (not a combi) so is naturally quieter. It is unusually small so mine fits in a 400mm wide kitchen wall cabinet (mine have 900mm high doors, you might find the flue sticks out of the top) although it is a fake with no top or bottom panel, just a door between the adjacent cabs. The higher power ones are a bit deeper than the less powerful models. Maker's catalogue has the dimensions.
