Has anyone ever had any soundproofing done?
Was is effective?
Was it expensive?

Keen to know this too... we’re DIY people so could we potentially do this ourselves? Any recommend products?

We did this and was well worth the money, cost just over £3k, that was10 years ago for a 30 sq m room in London.

We had quite high ceilings and was dropped 7 inches.

Love emails, managed to find the original quote and copied and pasted what we had done:

Ceiling height loss +/-8 inches)

  • Build a 2 x 6 Joist structure under ceiling.
  • Fill voids with 100mm RS60 Acoustic Mineral Wool
  • Install resilient bars onto joists.
  • Add 1st layer 19mm Soundplanc plaster board
  • Seal all edges with mastic
  • Add 2nd layer of 12.5mm Soundblock plasterboard

Hope that helps.

We did it, created a stud wall, filled with acoustic rockwool sound slabs and then boarded with soundproofing plasterboard. We also put it under the floor but we didn't do the ceiling. It was done on the party wall as the neighbour was pretty loud. It didn't really work that well and the sound ended up travelling though other routes and some shared walls would have been impossible to do. Long story short, we ended up moving! It definitely dulled the sound but it wasn't enough.

@Alexalee
Its a large maisonette, an old Victorian villa conversion, not converted brilliantly hence the noise!

We researched thoroughly before deciding who to use and what system. For us it has been well worth the investment.

We have a room that is soundproofed can't tell u the details though as it was already done when we moved in. We use it as the playroom and it's amazing particularly for my dh who works nights and is in the bedroom above!

Where's the sound coming from? If the sound is coming through bare floorboards then carpets will make a huge difference

Cost a fortune and didn’t work. I am now moving.
