Where to live? Manchester/Cheshire/Derbyshire

Hoping for some advice on where to live 😊

DH and I currently live in a Manchester suburb but would like to move somewhere more rural now that we've had DD and would love to find a pretty village within reasonable commuting distance (approx 1h) from Manchester city centre, where we both work.

Other requirements would be good state schools, local amenities (shop, pub etc) and sense of community. A train station nearby would be ideal!

Any recommendations? TIA x

What's your budget and how many bedrooms would you like ideally? This is likely to influence where is worth you looking at.

geordiepidge · 09/09/2018 20:14

Have you looked at Uppermill and Greenfield (if you have a biggish budget) or Mossley (if your budget is more modest). All three have what you're after.

CaseStudyResearch · 09/09/2018 20:20

If there was work for us up north, I’d move to Timperley or Goostrey. Goostrey in particular hasn’t expanded ridiculously like other places nearby, so still retains that community feel.

RedPandaMama · 09/09/2018 20:23

Newton Le Willows! We're moving there in a couple of months time. Still reasonably affordable, gorgeous old high street with shops and cafes, loads of pubs. Tesco and Aldi 5 mins away, brilliant train station where you can commute to Manchester in 20 mins (other half does) but also less than 10 mins drive on to M6. Loads of stuff to do e.g. fetes and Christmas markets, gorgeous old georgian buildings and church.

birdywird · 09/09/2018 20:53

We'd need 4 bedrooms @wowfudge and our max budget is £600k

Thanks for the suggestions @geordiepidge @CaseStudyResearch @RedPandaMama - I'll look into all those places 👍🏼

Have a look at saddlworth as said above

Everythingsr0sie · 09/09/2018 20:59

Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chinley or if you fancy a larger town then Glossop.

(I love the Peak District)

wowfudge · 09/09/2018 21:06

Okay - that's a healthy budget: Disley, Poynton, Marple, New Mills area (there are some gorgeous places around here). Think about taxiing your daughter around, etc. especially when she's older.

ValeEden · 09/09/2018 22:39

Mid Cheshire - Knutsford or surrrounds with that budget.
Or slightly further south - Northwich or surrounds where your money will go further? Good motorway links although the commute may be a little too far.
Both linked to Manchester by the train.

birdywird · 10/09/2018 07:15

Thanks @CatsCatsCats11 - definitely need to check out Saddleworth villages 👍🏼

I've visited the otter sanctuary in Chapel-en-le-Frith years ago @Everythingsr0sie but don't know anything else about it and never been to Chinley or Glossop so will look in to those 😊

@wowfudge I know Disley from visiting Lyme Park (sadly out of budget 😂) and will look in the other places you mention too.

@ValeEden which of the villages around Knutsford and Northwich would you recommend?

wowfudge · 10/09/2018 07:22

Are you sure Disley is out of budget? Just had a look and 4 bed places are £500k and below.

birdywird · 10/09/2018 07:25

I meant Lyme Park @wowfudge 😂😂😂

But yes will look into the rest of Disley - thank you 😊

Ah! You can get somewhere really nice for that budget.

LaMainDeFatima · 10/09/2018 07:27

Agree with PP: look at Tameside/ Oldham areas of saddlesworth, Greenfields etc . Problem is snow in the winter and make sure you’re near a train station. There’s some stunning views and places

Also New Mills ( Lyme Park)

Leek? Might be a bit far

ValeEden · 10/09/2018 09:14

@birdywird have a look at Mobberley, Plumley, Davenham and Hartford. Also have a look at Knutsford itself.

samanthalou · 10/09/2018 10:14

@RedPandaMama
I am currently buying in Warrington (I live in Warrington with parents at the moment).

Newton-Le-Willows is lovely! If I drove, it would have been my first choice to buy in. My DHTB lives in Lowton at the moment which isn't too far.

Its a great place with great local connections!

lastqueenofscotland · 10/09/2018 11:41

Greenfield is gorgeous as long as you don’t need to use the train much on the weekend, fecking ale trail Angry

lastqueenofscotland · 10/09/2018 15:21

You’ve also got tintwhistle which is lovely but I suspect schools would be in Stalyvegas and not sure how good they are.

Pigletpoglet · 10/09/2018 15:30

Hope Valley - Hathersage, Bamford, Hope and Edale are all on the line to Picadilly and within an hour (train or drive). Also close to Sheffield in the other direction.

OlennasWimple · 10/09/2018 15:33

Poynton!

namechangedtoday15 · 10/09/2018 21:04

Just have a think about how long you're going to live there. We're in early teenage years now and it's priceless being somewhere the children can walk to school / friends / their activities and we don't have to taxi them around - plus we have access to fab public transport (tram) for them to venture further afield. Feel like we've got some time back.

We originally wanted something a bit more rural but really glad we're still in suburbia! I think transport isn't great in some more rural places on the outskirts of Manchester / Cheshire (not sure about Derbyshire!)

shutlingsloe · 11/09/2018 12:44

Poynton would seem to fit your requirements!
