Day1977 · 05/09/2018 08:56

Hi right I did post this question regards my oh getting a job near London however he has now had a job offer in Pinxton. So here I go again lol. I'm looking for somewhere good for active families ie walks, kids have quads, dog walking cycling etc. Personally I prefer just sitting drinking gin however now I have children the fun stuff is over lol. Anyhooo good schools are essential and some village puds wld be nice. I'm coming from Perthshire in Scotland so this is a massive change with 2 preschool kids. Ideas lovely ladies wld be much appreciated. Obviously I'm coming to take a look but ideas for where to start wld be great ie what's Kirkby in Ashfield like?

So I've done a bit of research, how about Matlock and places near it???

I live in Nottingham. Don’t know this area intimately but a lot of these towns around here are quite run down and deprived. Linby, Ravenshead, papplewick are all nice villages.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 07/09/2018 22:54

Kirkby is not nice, very run down to be honest. As is Pinxton itself, Sutton in Ashfield and South Normanton. Selston is OK but not great. I’d probably look at a longer commute and start with the villages around Chesterfield.

Day1977 · 08/09/2018 08:38

What about chesterfield itself? Appreciate all ur help guys :)

There is plenty of countryside in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Pinxton is very handy for the M1 so you’ve lots of options.

What’s your budget?

Day1977 · 08/09/2018 08:50

Or Hucknall?

Ivytheterrible, yes those places seem nice and shorted commute.

You would get a decent house in Matlock for that. Chesterfield is cheaper and there are villages around the M1 area that are quite nice.

Barlborough is near Junction 30 and is very nice (but on the expensive side) but wouldn't recommend Duckmanton at Junction 29a. Do you want town or country, I could give an opinion on what the areas are like if you find something you like the look of.

Over budget but this estate is a really nice estate and you could walk to Pinxton from there. Houses do come on for under £200000 on the estate.

It does sound to me like you want to be in a village though.

Cromford?

Day1977 · 08/09/2018 09:29

I would live in the town or a village I don't actually mind it's more about being able to get out and about etc if u c what I mean. Safety and good schools are the most important thing and ill go wherever they are and compromise on the rest.

Savoycabbage that estate looks nice but is pinxton not to be avoided?

Glamorousgrandmother, I will do if I find anything I like :)

NotMeNoNo · 08/09/2018 10:00

OH used to live near there. There are a lot of quite nice villages north and west of Alfreton. Pinxton/Sth Normanton are all ex mining/ex colliery communities which can be a bit run down although there is redevelopment happening all the time.

But if you get over the Peak District side it's lovely countryside. He thinks you don't need to go as far as Chesterfield and believe me don't commit to needing to commute on the M1 every day!

Day1977 · 08/09/2018 10:15

Notmenono so to avoid the M1 shld we stay north of Pinxton ??? What sort of area does he think makes the commute easier?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 08/09/2018 15:25

I live very close and I honestly wouldn’t go for any of the villages near there. Chesterfield is ok, probably the nicest if the nearby towns but I’d look at Baslow, Ashover area. There are routes that avoid the M1. Going a bit East you could look at Papplewick, Newstead Village or Ravenshead but budget might be tight for that area.

Day1977 · 08/09/2018 16:48

Ok great ill google all those just now and take a look :)

OP posts:
soulrider · 08/09/2018 16:53

Wouldn't advise Newstead Village tbh.

Day1977 · 08/09/2018 18:25

Ok soulrider ill cross that one off :)

I have been looking at Chesterfield and I think the best idea is to rent there before buying until I become more familiar with the area :)

OP posts:
glamorousgrandmother · 08/09/2018 19:30

Chesterfield is OK, a variety of housing available and 200k should get you something nice. The West side eg Walton, Wingerworth is popular but there are good parts all around.

I might be a bit biased.

Day1977 · 08/09/2018 19:35

No iv been doing a bit of research and it seems quite a good place lol. I'll rent then c how it goes. Can't thank ALL u guys enough I honestly think this is a BRILLIANT site for getting info from people who actually know stuff ( for want of a better word lol). Seriously though much appreciate everyone taking the time to help me out. With a 2 and 4 year old to think of all your info has really helped me loads.

NotMeNoNo · 09/09/2018 08:29

It's a lovely area and pretty well placed both for the Peak District and transport. If you like your outdoor sports there's a Decathlon, the Outlet village and the Rab factory shop nearby. We live south of Nottingham but are often heading that way Smile
