Thinking has moved on from Beckenham to Bristol and I wondered if you could give me some advice. I would work from home, but DH would commute 3 days a week. Where would we want to live in Briz for him to get to the station easily? I would have thought near the station, but there could be some whizzy bus route I don't know about.
SO if you commute from Bristol where's the best place to live. Have DD11yrs so would need to be near nice senior school too. Any help would be appreciated - house budget £450k ish...

We have also considered a move from London to Bristol as have friends/ family there. House prices seem relatively high for what you get, I think as so many people move down there from London. If commuting, I’d suggest looking at areas near Parkway as I think there are better value options over that side than near Temple Meads. Another option would be near Nailsea and Blackwell or Yatton stations on same line as Temple meads. There are 2 decent comps close by and you should be able to get a good sized house and garden. Would be small town rather than city living though!
Friends who have moved to Bristol really like it. I know a few people who commute once a week into London. I get the impression that in Bristol itself there is competition for school places so you need to be careful of catchments, similar to London really.

Hmm, it's tricky isn't it, I can imagine that the commute might be a bit grim after a while. I've just noticed that the Elizabeth Line will stop at Paddington, so that will help DH get to work a bit easier.
I need to go and have a look at Parkway. A friend of mine has just move to Frome so will have a look when we visit.

Parkway or Temple Meads stations? The new metro bus routes are just opening up and I know that at least some of them go through Temple Meads

Would your DH be happy to cycle to the station?

Either really avocado we’re open to suggestions 😁

Traffic can be terrible so best to avoid needing to take a bus to the station.

Definitely much cheaper around parkway station.

Bristol is big and has very different parts to it. Traffic is busy. Around Parkway is mostly newer style housing. Depends what you like. House prices are not cheap. I think you need to rent for a while to decide which area you want to be in and to experience the commute. Traffic is very different at different times of day. I love it, but my commute to work is 10 mins walk. DH works 6 miles across town and cycles every day.

It’s a super expensive commute! One of the worst.

What about one of the very west cross rail stations?

FlourishingMrs · 06/09/2018 21:12

Can he get a job in Bristol? Temple meads area has older properties, parkway is near newer developments so depends on that you like.

Totterdown! Lovely area, nice shops, quick to get to Temple Meads by bus / bike / walk. House prices are expensive though, about £300k for a two-bed terrace.

SarfE4sticated · 08/09/2018 11:04

A local job would be the aim, but commuting 3 days a week until then.

Victoria Park, Totterdown, naice parts of Knowle are all easily commutable on foot or bus. All decent areas but like all of Bristol not cheap. Bedminster also possible by foot, just about, and is v central. You can also walk to the centre from all those areas whereas Parkway is miles away - I don't consider it Bristol!
