Utilities! What to change when, when moving house!

Hi All,

Sorry I feel like I post some really boring threads...! But we are moving house on 17th September, and before we moved into the current house lived with parents, so it's the first time we are having to deal with cancelling utilities, etc, and porting or starting suppliers in the new house!

I've just finished my online application on Royal Mail for the redirection, and it said that you have to apply at least 5 working days beforehand, which got me panicking about other stuff I may not have thought of! Our buildings insurance is temporary free cover until our completion date/time, when I have to call them, but what is the etiquette with other utilities?

Google has not proven to be too helpful with checklists which are great, but no timings! And obviously I could call round all the providers, but would rather not spend that time if anyone on MN has this sacred knowledge Wink

Thanks in advance all for any assistance!

I think we phoned up on the day we moved out to give final readings and then phoned on the day we moved in with the starting reading. Take photos of both.
I think we sorted our broadband a few weeks beforehand to make sure we had a smooth transition but that didn't happen and we were on phone data for about a month :(
We also had a letter from the water company saying they would come and fit the water meter. Well, we didn't want one and have had a huge battle to not get one installed.

I am moving on Friday so will take meter reading on Thursday night and phone on the Friday.

Check out www.iammoving.com

A lot of them can be done through this, or via websites.

Insurance is probably the main one to get in place beforehand. Last time we moved I did quite a lot afterwards, making sure to get meter readings at the right times. You may be able to submit those online too.

TV Licence is the one I have forgotten about in the past.

Energy supplier info above.

Contact broadband suppliers now. We moved supplier because it was quicker to get a new contract set up than to port the existing one, for reasons that still baffles me.

Oh yes and Broadband and Sky TV, because you need to arrange an engineer some of the time, or get new equipment. That’s the one that takes the longest.

Thanks everyone! Sorry for delayed response, for some reason didn't get email notification that anyone had replied!! But that's super useful! TV licence I hadn't actually thought of either, thanks Normhonal! We are with Virgin atm for broadband only - their service AND customer service is awful and they keep upping their price so we are now paying nearly £40 a month for internet only! Definitely plan on moving away from them, will start shopping around!
