Water softener?

Just moved into a new ish house in a hard water area. We have a utility room and cupboard space for a water softener.... Any recommendations?

Interested to know whether there is a water softener that can be installed outside - rather than taking up under-sink space in a tiny kitchen? Stopcock is under sink which sits under window, so piping presumably could be routed through outside wall, if there's a suitable model.

It's possible there is some space under the worktop in the corners (preferably the corner where the plumbing duct is)

Outdoor plumbing is to be avoided due to frost.
