Mystery cupboard *with terrible doodle*

Hello!

So I walked into my dining room this morning half asleep when my DD ran past and I jumped out of her way, as I did so the wall moved.

I gave it a prod and a knock and found that it's not a wall at all, but there is something hollow behind a painted piece of wood, which as been made to look like a wall.

We already have an under the stairs pantry, so we have no idea what it could be, but after looking at the living room I can see a decent chunk is being taken up by this mysterious cupboard.

Does anybody have any ideas? I can't seem to find anywhere I can buy original plans online which was suggested to me.

It's a little creepy having a portion of your house you never knew existed before, but I don't want to go tearing down the fake wall to discover a mess.

In the US there's a website that tells you if anyone died in your house (for a small fee). Apparently estate agents aren't legally required to disclose it over there. Not sure what the position is in the UK. Just as a point of interest...

oooh, I hope it's something exciting. but probably just pipes :(

wowfudge · 28/08/2018 13:18

There was a poster a couple of months ago who found stairs to a cellar they didn't know existed when they bought their house. She made everyone wait for an update whilst she fed her kids their tea iirc. They didn't find anything interesting down there.

ProcrastinatingPingu · 28/08/2018 13:31

Right, I told DH about the mysterious wall/cupboard/death chamber, and he said he knew about the wall as he knocked on them all?! ConfusedHmm

He claims it's nothing and said not to ruin the wall.
I've made the smallest pin prick hole but can't find the hammer or drill for the life of me.

I'll be back... with something to hack at the hole with.

I hope it's a cellar (sans dead bodies) as we've got too much junk.

It's probably the nothing at all that was suggested, just a hole to the abyss.

oh i am fiercely disappointed, I thought this was going to be a photo of a cupboard with a horrific drawing on the wall..

I would be worrying that my house had previously been owned by a hitherto unknown serial killer with a penchant for diy.

Just saying Wink

BaronessBomburst · 28/08/2018 13:40

How can it be nothing?
Even if it's only a boarded-up alcove you could turn it into a small and useful cupboard.

picklemepopcorn · 28/08/2018 13:40

Hang a picture on it RIGHT NOW! accidentally miss the nail while hammering it in...

MurunBuchstansagur · 28/08/2018 13:45

Following!

VelociraptorRex · 28/08/2018 13:45

Or you could be playing with DD and trip over, accidentally putting a hammer holding hand through said wall??

Almostthere15 · 28/08/2018 13:50

How can your DH have known but not be burning to find out what's there?!

Did you say there was one upstairs as well? Could it be a Dumb Waiter?

SentToTheSynByn · 28/08/2018 14:03

I used to live in a house in London with a cellar. The cellar wad divided in half by a waist height brick wall filled with earth. Often wondered what dead bodies might be buried in there.

Who knows what lurks behind walls, under patios etc

MollyHuaCha · 28/08/2018 14:05

What happens if OP is grabbed by the wall cavity monster er... falls into the hole and does not return?

OrgyOfBarminess · 28/08/2018 14:05

Is your kitchen on the other side of the wall? Could it be a serving hatch?

Betsy86 · 28/08/2018 14:08

Lol dh tapped the walls Grin exactly what my stepdad was busy doing while we were all out visitng there potential new house.
We must all become wall tappers we are missin out on so many potential finds...x

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 28/08/2018 14:08

Our flat has a fireplace in the bedroom (1920s Glasgow tenement) and someone had boarded up the 2 built in bookcases either side of it! Thankfully DGFIL is someone who likes to wreck things and found them by ripping the covering wood off. Grin

TitsalinaBumSquash · 28/08/2018 14:13

Obviously you need to look, just incase it's the door to Narnia or A portal to somewhere else cool or treasure, or filled with bodies I may have an overactive imagination.

If it's nothing, out a door on it and give yourself a handy storage space.

Come on OP, wreck make a restrained hole in the wall!

ProcrastinatingPingu · 28/08/2018 14:27

MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT AHEAD

So I went ahead and hacked away at the wall a little bit, I used a rolling pin, bread knife and some crap scissors and made a half decent hole. I even took a photo!

Being brave I put my finger in and felt around and all I felt was a brick wall.
So there we are, it's a bloody brick wall, or at least the bit I could feel and see was.
They've either bricked something up, or as previously suggested it's the chimney breast and only the upstairs was taken away.

I'm glad there doesn't seem to be anything living (or dead) in there, but I'd gotten excited by that point and I was hoping for a cellar.

Thanks for all of your suggestions everyone, it's been interesting! I'll post the crappy photos anyway 😂 DH is going to kill me, it's time to find a suitable picture frame to put up.
