Mystery cupboard *with terrible doodle*

Hello!

So I walked into my dining room this morning half asleep when my DD ran past and I jumped out of her way, as I did so the wall moved.

I gave it a prod and a knock and found that it's not a wall at all, but there is something hollow behind a painted piece of wood, which as been made to look like a wall.

We already have an under the stairs pantry, so we have no idea what it could be, but after looking at the living room I can see a decent chunk is being taken up by this mysterious cupboard.

Does anybody have any ideas? I can't seem to find anywhere I can buy original plans online which was suggested to me.

It's a little creepy having a portion of your house you never knew existed before, but I don't want to go tearing down the fake wall to discover a mess.

I thought this waa going to be about penises! Shock

Oh come on OP - where's your spirit of adventure? Get a hole made in the false wall and check it out!

We have a wooden panel over the bath that the shower head hooks onto. It's proud of the wall by about 2-3 inches. I unscrewed it to see what it was concealing and was very disappointed when it turned out to be an area or missing plaster and nothing else. But at least I know now.

Listen OP: there could be a safe in there. Then you need to start a 'what's in the safe thread?' Always a MN winner.

Could it be an old pantry from the original kitchen?

IhatetheArchers · 28/08/2018 11:33

You can get one of those tiny cameras on a flexible pole that are used for inspecting drains. That way you would only need to make a tiny hole.

ProcrastinatingPingu · 28/08/2018 11:34

I do like treasure.

Right, it's decided, when DD is up from her nap I'm going in. No way I'm waking the beast.

Pray for me that it's not full of dead mice and spiders.

You only need a hole big enough to put phone camera lenses and flash against to take a picture.

Here's hoping there is nothing dead and that there is something good in there!

ProcrastinatingPingu · 28/08/2018 11:37

Possibly an old pantry @Ignoramusgiganticus, my mum mentioned maybe a cold store? Who knows.
I'll update when I've made the place look a state.

I hope something exciting is in there.

SimonBridges · 28/08/2018 11:42

If it is just boring pipes or something then it’ll be easy enough to box in again.

nononsene · 28/08/2018 11:46

I can't believe you didn't go straight in with a hammer!! It would have been a no brainer for me.Do it!!!

wowfudge · 28/08/2018 11:53

Fab - we're with you every hammer swing of the way!

Or one of the last owners.

I had an old cottage that someone at one stage had squared off all the rooms.

I removed all the plasterboard and got an extra foot or 18" width and depth in each room.

Dancer12345 · 28/08/2018 12:03

Dooo it! Dooo it! Dooo it!

You’re very restrained, I’d have hacked a big hole in the wall by now!

butlerswharf · 28/08/2018 12:04

supercalifragilistic2 · 28/08/2018 12:07

Supporting beam?

Alternatively, the only option is the gap is filled with dead bodies.

Babyiwantabump · 28/08/2018 12:08

Ooh exciting!
My bet is on the ex owners spouse - who mysteriously disappeared one october morning .....

(Shameless placemark)

Shutupsidney · 28/08/2018 12:35

I am not leaving until I know. Tell your DH we made you do it.

SpectacularAardvark · 28/08/2018 12:36

We had a bit of the house like that, I got all excited, imagining pirate treasure, mysterious bones, piles of bank notes etc...

Turned out to be nothing. Literally nothing, not even any floor boards, no idea why, so weird.

Teddy1970 · 28/08/2018 12:44

I LOVE these threads! It's a dream of mine to find a secret doorway or passage in a house, you'd better come back and tell us what's happening OP!

RosaRoll · 28/08/2018 12:47
