Removal companies - tipping the workers?

So we are due to move house this week. Hurray.

I haven't used a removal company before but I have read about tipping them once the job is done.

What's the going rate?

I think we tipped ours £100 but they packed everything too. it was a huge job over several days that cost a few grand but they worked really hard and were lovely. It was a token gesture for them to get a few beers afterall £100 between 4 isn’t really that much.

I think about £20 per person is right for at least half a day's work

legolimb · 27/08/2018 09:12

Its one day and I'm doing the majority of the packing myself.

Will see how many workers and how good a job they do.

We did the packing ourselves, moving from 1 bed flat on 2nd floor, 3 men, tipped £20 each.

This hadn’t even occurred to me! I won’t be tipping to be honest, I know that probably sounds bad, but where does tipping end!

PickAChew · 27/08/2018 23:03

I didn't tip but ours got many cups of tea. I also bought mince pies to munch on but someone chucked them in a box and loaded them into the van before I had realised!

Speaking as someone who has a family connection to a removals company I'd say that tipping is not expected at all but it's much appreciated when someone does.

MrsBungle · 27/08/2018 23:07

I tipped £20 each and I bought them coffees and bacon rolls. I felt they were really professional and friendly and so I was happy to tip.

We gave ours £100. They packed as well and dh was working so I was doing the move on my own, they were amazing, rebuilt all flat-pack etc at no extra charge, wouldn’t finish until the dc’s rooms were all set up etc. I fell a bit in love with them tbh 😂

I used to work in the industry (sales rep) and it's not expected by the moving team. I'm of the opinion that I get paid to do my job, No one tips me for doing it well...however anyone working in my home is offered drinks/lunch. Last house move we bought the team fish and chips for lunch, which is always appreciated.

Thanks for all replies.

I think will play it by ear and see how it goes.

I am not sure how tea making will go as I've packed everything including cups. There is a chip shop near to the new home so if we're getting moved in around lunchtime we could by them lunch.
