Kitchen splashbacks

I admit it, I'm defeated by kitchen splashbacks. It's sad, I know, but we're spoilt by choice these days. Just upstand? Just tiles? Both? Tiles all the way up or just a bit? I'm not keen on metro tiles, which adds an extra layer of complication. Could big tiles work? Would love some non-metro-tile ideas.

I do love the glass splashbacks but doubt our walls are flat enough and don't really want to faff about finding out.

I’ve got tiles behind the sink, and just an upstand everywhere else. I can’t say I’ve ever needed anything more.

Just up stands here except behind the cooker which has a large glass splash back the same width as cooker and up to the hood , there's a window behind sink so nothing needed there

We’ve just got upstands as the hob is on a peninsular and I didn’t really want tiles everywhere.

Though our walls are very wonky & we need to do some decent filling behind the upstand!

We are having a mirror splashback behind the sink area

Hmm, hadn't thought about sink area, good point. I like the idea of glass behind the hob.

mellongoose they make me feel bit weird!

Thanks everyone.

Hi love those melon! I'd left my walls bare are I got the kitchen put in because I didn't want tiles really but something like those would be perfect for me

mellongoose · 23/08/2018 07:02

My DB and DSIL have one. The guy lives in Cornwall and makes them out of resin (like surfboard resin). Then polished up. It looks awesome and you'll never see two the same. I don't live near them but will ask if they can send me a pic of theirs.

I’m having the same dilemma, our builder suggested composite for splash back yesterday which I think we will pursue.

inquiquotiokixul · 23/08/2018 07:47

Go for glass, it's gorgeous and lovely. Wall flatness doesn't matter a jot - they use spacers in the corners to bring the pane out by a mm or two anyway.

HomeOfMyOwn · 23/08/2018 09:34

I lived in a house with just upstands (and a stainless steel panel behind hob). Kitchen was painted with scrubbable paint and there was no problems by the sink or elsewhere with water / marks even when I accidentally splattered tomato sauce on wall Blush
The only thing I didn't like was the stainless steel behind the hob constantly needed cleaning to look nice.

IStillDrinkCava · 23/08/2018 16:35

Composite - yet another option!

We have 15cm height between sink and window, which is a funny amount to fill above an upstand.

up-stands - are they necessary? I am planning a modern kitchen and I think that they look like a more traditional style? What do you think ?

I am struggling with what to put behind the hob as there are no top cupboards and I don't want the wall "broken up" IYSWIM? Maybe a clear glass - but I would like it to be really thin.....struggling

Whattodowithaminute · 23/08/2018 21:41

I don’t like upstands, glass or metro tiles from a design perspective hence having white composite as an easier to clean (read expensive) solution...

IStillDrinkCava · 24/08/2018 22:14

Wow composite is expensive.

another maybe tiles and match the wall paint to the colour? Or if you're doing glass maybe it would look less broken up to continue the clear glass round with an upstand to kind of blend it in?

I'm still stuck.

My sink is in my island but just had these put up behind my range cooker as it's splashback. An alternative to Metro tiles.
