How to jazz up a boring house?

I am in the process of trying to buy my first house. I love very modern homes and very old homes, Georgian, Victorian, etc. However, short of moving to the other end of the country, I can't afford the kind of house I want.

What we can afford is something like the house attached. We've looked at brick houses and painted houses and they are just so uninspiring and uninteresting to me, bland, lacking character. But, I do want to get on to the property ladder so it looks like this is what I will have to make do with unless I win the lottery!

Does anyone have any ideas for ways to make this type of house look more interesting? Either personally or things you have seen? I am desperate for inspiration!

If the house you are buying is a semi like in the picture, I probably wouldn’t do loads to change the exterior as it may look odd compared to the house next door. I’d just try and make it look the best version of itself - freshly painted walls, windows and doors etc. Then give the front garden a makeover - perhaps a nice cobblestone or brickweave path to the door, new hedge or fencing and some pots around the door. Perhaps train a wisteria or rose up the front. That isn’t a particularly ugly house imo, it’s nice.

I think the house in the picture is nice too! Add some roses round the door, pots with standard bay trees and it would look great.

I have just bought a house which is not a looker. I currently live in a really beautiful house, and I feel daunted by trying to make my ugly pebbledashed house look good. I will paint it, grow plants up it and try to make the gardens beautiful. I have tarmac outside, so as a cheap temporary solution I am putting stone chippings down.

Maybe change the canopy over the porch?

Thank you all, I think you may be right. I'll just have to get a nice door and work on the front garden and fence, I think. It's just a bit disappointing, but I suppose I can let my creativity rip inside.
