For Sale sign dilemma

OoohSmooch · 15/08/2018 09:14

We are just about to put our house on the market, pictures taken etc ready for the online advert.

We requested not to have a For Sale sign, our neighbours next to us and one down know we are selling but we didn't want a sign put up as I didn't want the huge HELLO WE ARE SELLING! message right outside our house. If my other neighbours are like me they'll know once the advert is online anyway.

However the agent has put a sign up when we were at work. I don't see much point in having it taken down now unless anyone here has a good reason to??

I'd be phoning the estate agent and telling them to take t down - you asked them not to put one up and they've ignored your wishes. Unless you're going to rely more on people passing by than looking at the internet (for example, if you're in a seaside town and marketing towards holiday home owners), I'd be suggesting that they might like to start listening to you or you'll find an agent who will. Not grumpy this morning, honest

wowfudge · 15/08/2018 09:48

I don't see the objection tbh. If someone drives past it's a useful prompt to check online and anyone who is seriously looking will find it useful if they want to take a look at the location before viewing. People move house, it's a fact of life. So what if other neighbours know.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 15/08/2018 09:49

Why don’t you want people to know your house is on the market?

Couchpotato3 · 15/08/2018 09:49

Your house, your choice. You can take the sign down yourself and instruct the estate agent to come and take it away. I'd take a dim view of an agent ignoring your first instruction though.....

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 15/08/2018 09:53

Give estate agents an inch and they will take a mile. You asked them not to put one up and they ignored that, so they're going to need to take it down today.

If you let this slide, they'll know you're a soft touch.

RedNed · 15/08/2018 11:39

We sold without one. I asked the agent why they hadn't put one up and they said lots of people don't want one these days so assumed we didn't.

I think it is good to have a sign. I think most people do drive bys before doing viewings, we certainly do, it makes it easier to find the house. We have also seen signs up in areas we like, but have missed it on Zoopla, and have then enquired with the agent.

Lilmisskittykat · 15/08/2018 15:36

It's so hard to find a house for a drive by if it doesn't have a board.

Petalflowers · 15/08/2018 15:45

We sold without one, in rightmove days, and we used to live on a busy road where it would have been spotted.

Contact them and ask them to take it down.

Nowadays, most people do their research on Rightmove, so they are fairly obsolete anyway.

Petalflowers · 15/08/2018 15:45

Sorry, pre-rightmove days

Spicylolly · 15/08/2018 15:46

We bought our first house because of a 'for sale' sign, we weren't even looking at the time. So it seems silly not to have one as you never know who is going to drive by 👍

MovingThisYearHopefully · 15/08/2018 21:17

I think for sale boards are still a vital marketing tool. I hate it when we're trying to find a house & there is no board, makes it so much harder to find the house as often you don't know what house number you're looking for.

NadiaLeon · 16/08/2018 03:33

Never understood why some folks DO NOT want people to know they're selling their house. What are the possible reasons for this?

Vitalogy · 16/08/2018 04:18

It might be the fact that these days anyone even if not interested in buying can look online and nosey in all your rooms.

I know it's a bit of a cringe OP but it's best to use all the means possible to get noticed really. I'd leave it up.

Patienceofatoddler · 16/08/2018 06:59

Ive sold two in the last 5 years and not bothered having a sign up.

Majority of people looking for a house will see it on Right move.

Most people google map and can find the property easily without a sign at the end of the drive.

Personally I would be asking them to take it down and reiterate you clearly asked not for one.

You are paying them - It's up to you not them to decide.
