New kitchen!

We are planning a new kitchen and extension, which is all very exciting, but I feel a bit overwhelmed! Been round a few showrooms, got a few magazines, looked at the lessons learnt thread. But which kitchen company do you all recommend? We want reasonable quality, not too cheap, not too expensive, will probably go with a fairly traditional design. We've had a look at wrens, Ikea, B&Q, plus a few others I can't remember now.... they all merge into one after a while! Help!

DO NOT USE WREN

aftercare is total shit

Bumdishcloths · 12/08/2018 21:34

Bowden's are good

Bumdishcloths · 12/08/2018 21:34

Howdens even

We initially went with IKEA but installation costs were huge, then found a builder and ended up going with Howdens who matched IKEAs quote. Very happy with kitchen.

I was just about to ask the exact same question!

Nicer than Ikea, but not silly money. I've got no idea!

If you are SE London/Kent based, I would recommend:

We used a local kitchen company 15 years ago, and paid around £22k for a german made kitchen that to be fair has stood an awful lot of wear and tear although it's now looking dated.

We've got a Howdens catalogue and they do seem really good quality. It's just a case of finding a good local fitter then.

Do NOT go with Wren. As much as I love my kitchen now, the stress of dealing with their sheer incompetence was not worth it!

skippy67 · 12/08/2018 22:05

Hercy have you used them then? It'd be great if you could share your experience.

Have a look at DIY kitchen and Units Online.

We have Wren. Fitted by our builder though. They messed up delivery but it was rectified the following day and we kept the stuff that was wrong. Lovely kitchen, can’t fault it. I put Eden in same box as B&Q. Stuff good for the price, wouldn’t touch their fitting with a barge pole!

Beware kitchens that look good but aren’t appropriate for your lifestyle. I wanted a painted shaker door but was advised against it as I have children and the door is likely to develop hairline cracks along the joints if it’s slammed. So I chose a flat door instead. Also changed my handle choice when I realised it looked lovely but was difficult to grip.

woollysocksaresexy · 14/08/2018 16:48

Thanks for this, really helpful!
Llama, I am learning this, trying to balance my dreams with practicality and budget. Never thought that shaker style doors would be a problem though! (I have 3 dc of 4, 2 and 6 weeks)

Look for a local family owned firm.
Had a quote from Wren for a utility room which was 4 x the quote from local guy (who had previously done our kitchen).
I read the Wren Horror Thread on here afterwards and realised we had a narrow escape.

Howdens are very good . The cabinets are supplied already made up so they are ready to fit . Nice quality , plenty of choice

I have also used Rixonway which is an online kitchen company who do a nice kitchen range and again the cabinets are supplied made up

I've used them both several times and have been pleased with both purchase and aftercare

Chickencellar · 14/08/2018 17:42

Prettygrey
Did you buy direct from them? , I've come across them a while ago and then they just did kitchens for councils and HA .

prettygreywalls · 14/08/2018 18:04

Rixonway ? Yes , actually my friend ordered it who I work with because we were ordering in 3 kitchens at the same time but yes they were great , always there ready to help at the end of a phone or email , came out and helped with the designs and layout ,
Pointed out a couple of flaws in my original layout which were obvious once the kitchen designer said them so helped us tweaking the layout
Good solid cabinets ( they weighted a ton !) and looked fab
