Completed this morning but vendors still in!

Aargh, I could cry.

Completed and money wasn't received by the vendors solicitors at 9:30am.
We are all ready and waiting, it the eatat agents say they need a few more hours. No chain, and they have somewhere to go, so no idea why.
Is this common? When do we start kicking up a fuss about wanting to go to our house?

@Ikeepaforkinmypurse glad to see someone speaking sense on here!

GabsAlot · 22/06/2018 13:24

my dsis had the ne owners turn up onhner doorstep with keys saying they were ready so she had to hurry up and move

just go get the keys theyre legally yours now

Cacofonix · 22/06/2018 13:25

We had this a few houses ago. But more like they weren't out and our removal guys were going to leave with our stuff for the weekend (money had gone through hours before) so DH went in and said you have 30 mins to vacate and he helped the arseholes (they were) to pile their stuff on the road. They'd also been doing trips with a tiny van to the flat they had completed on weeks before. Plus they tried to leave their cat. Arseholes. You have to go in and tell them they are now trespassing. It helped that out removal guy went and told them to shift too.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 22/06/2018 13:25

wowfudge - as the vendors are moving out, perhaps the OP could be moving their belongings into the rooms that the vendors have cleared?
Not ideal but certainly workable.

bluerunningshoes · 22/06/2018 13:25

rachie you might want to check your home insurance. ours specifically says that locks need to be changed prior to occupation for burglary cover...

LagunaBubbles · 22/06/2018 13:29

go to the house with a locksmith. change the locks of your house

How would that work with the previous occupiers and their stuff still in the house then? Confused

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 22/06/2018 13:29
  1. you don't know the time the vendors are expected to leave in the first place! (apologies if I missed it)

  2. if they are in the middle of moving out, there's not many thing you can do, jumping in the middle will only delay things.

The buyer gets stressed, the vendor gets flustered, furnitures will bang in walls and doorways,

6 weeks in an awfully long time between exchange and completion, but if they are only getting their own keys today, they still only have 1 day to move.

Whatever the circumstances, it's not helpful to stress about it. Time for a nice lunch, pester the EA when they come back because they should have the keys, and enjoy the day!

Nothing in our insurance contract on that. Bizarrely it has been checked with a fine tooth comb after being royally screwed by them over something else

ikeepaforkinmypurse

I agree with you. Getting stressed won't accomplish anything.

trumpetoftheswan · 22/06/2018 13:33

I do feel your pain but honestly in the great scheme of things you are so nearly there.

When we moved into our previous house our mortgage had been unbelievable incompetent and, because the vendors had already exchanged, we ended up exchanging and completing on the same day.

Because they weren't sure whether it was all going ahead - we obvs wanted it to and we couldn't hassle our mortgage company anymore - they didn't start packing until completion.

We got the keys at 2am the next day. Looking back, we didn't have to be out of our place (renting between properties) and we could have just picked up the keys from the estate agent the next day.

There are lots of reasons they might be delayed. They know that you want the keys. They know that they have to move. They know that you now own the house.

Just try to trust that you'll be in before you know it.

Lookingforspace · 22/06/2018 13:36

EAs really should do more to explain to the stupid people that they need to be packed and ready to go before they wake up on moving day. There was a poster in here who talked about the vendors having a bbq to enjoy one last day in their lovely garden! Shock
As I said, if they knew it was costing them money they’d be up and out.

WerkSupp · 22/06/2018 13:36

I've always changed the locks on a new house, you wouldn't? Hmm

Jaxhog · 22/06/2018 13:38

Yep, changing the locks now will make your point nicely. And be one less thing to do tomorrow.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 22/06/2018 13:39

Grin Brilliant, there really are some "special" People!

The solicitors really should advise you of the time you are expected to hand the keys over if all goes well, and the EA should double-check you know - what's the point of paying them such a high fee if they don't their job, and they receive a lot more than the solicitors.

Quartz2208 · 22/06/2018 13:41

I tihnk your example though of long period of exchange to completion and empty property to move into is rare.

Plus when did they get the keys to the empty property.

Lunchtime is normal as to be honest who actually moves until the day if they are in a chain (and who can move) so removal men come in and take the morning. I always thought that was normal.

OP I moved in the huge (for the UK) snow of Winter 2010. Came down the night before/early morning of the day. Our removal men arrived but due to the snow and slippery conditions took until 3pm to get it all out. The people we were buying from removal men did not turn up due to the weather (and being dodgy). it was a nervy time - eventually they got a van and moved out but we did not get the keys until 5:30 and had to have our stuff in storage overnight. It was one of those things (and I dont even want to remember the cost of heating up a house that had an open door for 2 days)

Jaxhog · 22/06/2018 13:41

btw, don't leave now. If they get cross and leave the house unlocked as they leave, imagine the fun you'll have with insurance if burglars (or squatters) get in.

AJPTaylor · 22/06/2018 13:57

the last time we moved, removal firm came day before and loaded. we did an over night hotel. chaps arrived at 12.00 at new house to unload. done by 14.00
should i ever move again, that is exactly what i would do. even if i was moving round the corner.
it has taken many moves to realise this.

eurochick · 22/06/2018 13:57

The contracts you exchanged should have a time for them to vacate. When we last moved it was 2pm. That didn't stop the arseholes still dicking around until 7pm and us ending up paying our movers to help them clear out so we could get in with our 5 month old baby. I don't know what time was in your contract but it was very unlikely to have been before lunchtime, so cool your heels a bit!

DH up there with his parents waiting. apparently they are being really aggressive.
Not sure what their problem is!

OP posts:
ikeepaforkinmypurse · 22/06/2018 14:03

I expect so little to happen on moving day that I don't think DH and I ever took the day off together, one of us was always enough to "supervise" the movers. There has been a couple of times when we barely got the keys before the other one came back from work in the evening.

AJPTaylor
I am not sure many people would want to spend the extra cost.

maybe they are on MN? Grin

Again, do you actually know what time they were told to vacate? Because their 'problem' might be that from their point of view you've been harassing them for hours before they were actually required to get out.

NewBallsPlease00 · 22/06/2018 14:10

When we moved last time it has fallen through from week before so instead of the 4 mover men we only got 2, the old knackered one who could barely lift a feather and the young apprentice who was on his phone the entire time, we basically loaded the truck and they drove it same at other end, which meant we didn’t get to move in until 4pm and didn’t finish unpacking until 8pm- over time allowed, for the people we were moving into bo probs, for those moving into our house it means we were late for them but it wasn’t our fault- they could see that and were sweet about it. No one needs to be aggressive!

Cacofonix · 22/06/2018 14:11

@LisaSimpsonsbff it doesn't really matter if they feel bloody harassed. The moment the money has gone through the house is no longer theirs and they have to vacate. That is the law. The money went through this morning.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 22/06/2018 14:13

They have had weeks/months to vacate our chain free house as they have a property all along they were going to.
We haven't being harassing them. In laws sat in the car with my DH.

Not right outside or spoken to them. It's like they don't want to move
