Few of the paints I've tested (such as Goose Down) are not true greys. It's a lightish blue :/

Pics would help if you can recommend anything you painted on internal walls, please.

Very true @MismatchedPJs the lighting in my bedroom isn't great & it was at night... but it's definitely grey IRL

m0therofdragons · 04/06/2018 16:26

Dulux Engraved Locket. Can't get it as a pre mix, but if you go to a Dulux decorator centre they will mix it. It's definitely grey and not to dark

LynetteScavo · 04/06/2018 17:22

Not Polished Pebble by Dulux! It's unbelievably blue. The tester seemed a really light grey, and in the pot looked almost white:it's almost bloody denim on the walls. Confused

wowfudge · 04/06/2018 18:05

It really depends on the light in the room - we had a pale creamy brown look lilac in one of our rooms.

Dulux chic shadow, I have it on 3 walls in my room and it looks amazing!

Oh god. I have someone painting my bathroom polished pebble while I’m away. Was after grey, not blue! My DP is going to kill me if I hate it!

I did look at Chic Shadow but wasn’t brave enough to go dark. In your pictures though, it looks lovely! Maybe I should have just gone for it.

DustandRubble · 04/06/2018 19:43

I love the polished pebble in my hallway, hopefully you will too. I like the fact it looks different in different lights, it has personality.

DustandRubble · 04/06/2018 19:45

This is polished pebble on the walls and what was meant to be urban obsession on the bannisters. However we colour matched it with Valspar as Dulux was out of stock and it is definitely lighter. Thankfully I really like it!

MismatchedPJs yep, chic shadow has a pink tinge in our room. Really disappointed in it, I did the tester thing and it looked perfect but it looked completely different once all the walls were done in it.

MismatchedPJs · 04/06/2018 20:32

crumbs honestly, greys are just bizarre.

We had various testers up in 2 different rooms and DH described 3 different patches as "the pink", "the green" and "the brown". You've guessed it, they were all a grey recommended on this thread (chic shadow).

This is quite interesting, and my DH's argument for why we should stop with the tester pots altogether: nerdist.com/5-optical-illusions-that-show-you-why-your-brain-messes-with-the-dress/

dustandrubble thanks so much for that. I feel slightly better now!

I don’t know how it will look in the light of our bathroom but I quite like the idea that it will change depending on whether it’s bright and sunny or grey and cloudy.

I will try and come back and add a photo when it’s finished!

Ollivander84 · 04/06/2018 23:00

It's definitely to do with the light. My open plan living room and kitchen is painted in polished pebble. It is blue in the kitchen, and grey in the living room, pictures are of both areas

My bathroom is a very bright room so I think it will look more like your living room Ollivander. Phew!

KentishLady2018 · 08/06/2018 19:04

So... I’m home and the verdict on the paint is... it’s blue! Gutted! It doesn’t show properly in the photos though, but definite blue tinge.

Also makes my obviously pale grey tiles look creamy coloured?!

I actually like the paint colour but not sure it goes with the tiles. Going to live with it for a while but I’m having to rethink my whole colour scheme! 🙈

Those tiles do look a bit beige/cream. Oh dear. Could you go white instead? Or dark?

Troels · 09/06/2018 23:13

Dh painted with B&Q Colours Light Rain, it has come out a nice pale grey colour. Not bluey.

Uk79 · 03/03/2021 20:17

Crown Smoked glass is a wonderful grey. Painted in the hallway of a large victorian terrace and in a smaller 3bed ex la. It looks different in both but def no blue. I'd say more fresh green? tinge to a warmer pink (hardly noticeably so) undertones.

Grey changes with the light and depending on direction of room.

Dulux Khaki Mist def has a warm pink/ brown undertone. In a South facing room these undertones are heightened.

Goose down looks great in a North facing bathroom with blue undertones.

Johnston China clay is a greige, more beige in South facing rooms

Polished pebble def has blue / lilac undertones in a North facing room

These are my observations painting these colours in family homes over the past Yr :)

BusinessGoose · 04/03/2021 07:04

Another vote for Chic Shadow from dulux. It's a mid grey that looks like the colour of concrete. I've put in my bathroom and really like it.

I think a lot of people are really not understanding the different hues in “greys”. Some are warm greys with a red tint and others are cold greys with a blue tint. You need to look at a web site like Farrow and Ball to understand the differences. It’s well worth getting a few testers and putting them on card. Keep them in the space you want to paint and see how light and time of day affects the colour.

They greys I’ve used are Blackened, Cornforth White, Elephants breath and Wevet. All have differing properties and all are grey. It’s just what you prefer. It’s also useful to look at coordinating colours. So warm white or colder colours. What neutrals go with the grey or pops of colour.

Most greys are cold greys which mean they are more bluey greys. These look great in lighter greys such as Blackened but when they are darker can look steel grey and very cold. I’m a big fan of Elephants Breath because it’s far more versatile than a steel cold grey. It’s warmer and looks great with pale blues, chartreuse and coral colours as well as white and stone colours. Darker steel greys are not for me.

we went to B&Q and got valspar mixed from the cards and way back in the 90s when grey paint wasnt in the shops in so many choices i bought a big tin of white vinyl silk and a couple of testers of black silk and mixed my own shade of grey buy adding the black a little at a time, this was very pale grey though not dark grey

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/03/2021 23:11

In our house that weird mushroom colour always looks like a gorgeous grey. So I don’t really trust colour cards any more, and will be buying sample pots.
