Thamesmead or South Kensington?

So excited about moving to the UK from Oklahoma in November and am currently house-hunting - wanting to move to either South Kensington or Thamesmead. Would be great to know which one you would recommend in terms of housing stock/community feel/shopping etc - budget could stretch to either. Thanks a lot!

They are very different places - are you sure you're talking about the right places? If you can go south Ken then do. Avoid Thamesmead.

Confused
Furano · 14/05/2018 17:00

Are you sure you mean south ken or thamesmead??

If you have money for south ken that is a no brainier.

devilinme · 14/05/2018 17:01

Think you'll find South Ken more appealing Confused

Pimpernell182 · 14/05/2018 17:05

Why these two seemingly random and very different places? Agree with pp who asked if you're sure you've got them both right?

Needmoresleep · 14/05/2018 17:09

A bizarre choice between two extremes.

South Ken is very much international banker territory. Plenty of Americans, and also popular with the French, because of the Lycee. Lovely stucco houses mainly converted into flats, nice restaurants, expensive boutiques, good restaurants. Great if you have the budget and feel comfortable in monied expat circles.

Thamesmead has struggled in the past. Designed essentially as a new residential area along the Thames estuary, it failed to attract residents and ended up being mainly rental, often to people who could not afford anything else. Its improving. If you were a first time buyer with a limited budget it might now be worth looking at. Cross rail at Woolwich, the growth east along the Thames including the Olympic Park and the slow but steady regeneration of London docklands means Thamesmead is not as isolated as it was. So perhaps a canny long term investment. And I personally like the modern layout with lots of green. But there is not a lot there.

Honestly if you can afford South Ken, Thamesmead should not be on your list. If South Ken is a bit 'de trop', and I certainly found some of the competitive parenting a bit scary, there are lots of other choices. If you want something less urban, then Richmond, Wimbledon, Hampstead, and, if you are looking South East, Blackheath might fit the bill. Or if you want urban, Islington or Camden might work.

IrenetheQuaint · 14/05/2018 17:12

With the cash required to purchase a property in South Ken you could probably buy up an entire street in Thamesmead.

Chathamhouserules · 14/05/2018 17:13

I'm intrigued to know the process which led to these two as your final options. They are different worlds.

Psychologika · 14/05/2018 17:17

You could probably buy Thamesmead for the price of a South Ken house

LIZS · 14/05/2018 17:23

Agree they are very opposite ends of the spectrum. Thamesmead is a fairly new build suburb out of the city, South Ken chic , central and urban. Where is work etc?

olderthanyouthink · 14/05/2018 17:25

I'm trying to think what Op could have confused one on the places with... Canning Town? Kennington?

littlepooch · 14/05/2018 17:27

Yes i read this and thought this cant be right!!

Where will you be commuting to? Rough idea of budget?

EssentialHummus · 14/05/2018 17:31

Do you mean Hampstead?

littlepooch · 14/05/2018 17:35

Ah essential you could be right!

Chathamhouserules · 14/05/2018 17:45

I think south ken would be too posh for me and thames mead not quite there yet in terms of developing character and facilities, but there might be some middle ground somewhere else. Hampstead or Highgate?

VanGoghsLeftEar · 14/05/2018 17:51

Very random! Thamesmead is a dump. If you can afford it, Battersea, Chelsea, Highgate, Hampstead, Belsize Park are all nice.

duriandurian · 14/05/2018 18:12

Richmond on Thames? Kingston ON Thames?
South Ken is good for museums and has lots of students and French people (is embassy nearby?).
Richmond/Kingston greener and with Thames flowing through.
Thamesmead prob best steer clear

ShackUp · 14/05/2018 18:15

I don't think OP means Thanesmead, somehow... as PP said, Kingston upon Thames might be a more fitting alternative!

WomaninGreen · 14/05/2018 18:39

this is like the ultimate limbo for Londoners till OP comes back Grin

Pootlebug · 14/05/2018 18:41

I'm thinking this is Hampstead and Thamesmead confusion....

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/05/2018 18:43

I really want to know too! You could have said Wimbledon Village and South Ken or Lewish amd Thamesmead.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/05/2018 18:43

Lewisham

TrueBlue22 · 14/05/2018 18:46

Oh I can't wait for OPs return to this!

WomaninGreen · 14/05/2018 18:47

OP this is like your first glimpse into The Minds Of Londoners.

We'll wait a while before introducing you to North vs South.

StaplesCorner · 14/05/2018 18:48

Ha! As someone who lived on Thamesmead for 10 years, I can't wait to see what the OP comes back with. I hope its a typo!
