Thamesmead or South Kensington?

So excited about moving to the UK from Oklahoma in November and am currently house-hunting - wanting to move to either South Kensington or Thamesmead. Would be great to know which one you would recommend in terms of housing stock/community feel/shopping etc - budget could stretch to either. Thanks a lot!

Staples, have you spotted any lost Americans finding themselves in Thamemead when they had hoped for Kensington?

StaplesCorner · 14/05/2018 19:02

Need - I can only imagine what fate might befall an American lost in Thamesmead, esp. one from Oklahoma ...!

Somertime · 14/05/2018 19:10

You may be the first ever to have asked that 😃
South Ken is the perfect place to have a city lifestyle but Richmond has beautiful green spaces and easy access to the centre.
Please do street view Thamesmead

Bobbiepin · 14/05/2018 19:20

@womaningreen north vs south Grin

GreyCloudsToday · 14/05/2018 19:22

Ha ha, another Londoner here checking back to see the real location. It must be Kingston on Thames, surely?

StealthNinjaMum · 14/05/2018 19:27

Placemarking because it is such a funny thread title.

Needmoresleep · 14/05/2018 19:28

Staples, perhaps OP will come back asking for suggestions of things to see and do. A tour of Crossness?

TattyFrench · 14/05/2018 19:31

I used to go canoeing in Thamesmead with the school, in a concert lake filled with shopping trolleys and broken bottles. Them were the days.

WomaninGreen · 14/05/2018 19:32

@Bobbiepin

I presume you're grinning because you're on the right side Grin

PurplePumpkinPiss · 14/05/2018 19:33

I need to know too Smile

Slatternsdelight · 14/05/2018 19:35

OP you know when you get one of those emails saying you must send your bank details immediately because you're due a large windfall.....that email will have been sent from Thamesmead.

wormery · 14/05/2018 19:36

Waiting for op to replyGrin

KatherinaMinola · 14/05/2018 19:37

This has to be a joke.

littlepooch · 14/05/2018 19:40

Come back OP! We need to know!

TattyFrench · 14/05/2018 19:45

Is it the lake that attracted you to Thamesmead? It is a lovely feature.

Needmoresleep · 14/05/2018 19:48

Or the scope for trips to Erith pier?

Slatternsdelight · 14/05/2018 19:54

Oh yes, the day-trips to Erith!
Erith is the new Jaywick so I'm told.......

Jimbobjovi · 14/05/2018 19:58

This has given me such a giggle having been to both places Grin

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/05/2018 19:58

Do you think it could be Thames Ditton that the op means? Not as swish as South Ken obviously, but a nice, upmarket, cosy, family area.

Chathamhouserules · 14/05/2018 20:02

I think this must be a joke. But a good one!

AnneElliott · 14/05/2018 20:04

Got to be a typo surely? I used to live in Thamesmead - lots of riots at the council estate that the police wouldn't go into Shock

And yes to the residents of SE28 being responsible for some of those scam emails! A friend was an estate agent there and some of the stories he had were interesting to say the least!

Flooffloof · 14/05/2018 20:05

If you stuck up a big fence around thamesmead, it would look suspiciously like a prison no?

Catstar123 · 14/05/2018 20:08

I use to live in Woolwich, we use to think we were the “posh” area compared to Thamesmead 😜

Needmoresleep · 14/05/2018 20:09

You were.

Biologifemini · 14/05/2018 20:11

How about primrose hill or Tottenham?
I wouldn’t say one is particularly commutable from the other either. Fascinated by OP.
