Thinking of buying a reconditioned Smeg fridge freezer

Is this a terrible idea? They come in at about £450.

It is be a bit of wow factor in a (hopefully it will go through!) kitchen in my new house. The kitchen is just vile. It has plastic cladding on the walls...

In a year we will hopefully be able to afford to rip it all out, and I will endeavour to replicate the kitchen I'm leaving behind. But meanwhile I need to draw the eye away from the cladding and black plastic worktops

I can't afford to rip the cladding off yet as we don't know what's underneath it. Hopefully a wall. I am going to Annie Sloan the cladding day one...

I would not have one. Style over substance. Definitely not for £450.

I was going to do this then I read lots of reviews and asked opinions. Smegs are not good quality. Not worth it

Pompom42 · 09/04/2018 21:42

I bought one about 6 years ago. Was a great purchase. It's a 1/2 and 1/2 style one so freezer is great size. Cost me £120 eBay and £30 delivery cost . I had to buy without even seeing it.
I've had no problems with it at all

Thumbcat · 09/04/2018 21:45

I bought a second hand one on eBay 10 years ago and have never had any problems with it.

SquirrelWatcher · 09/04/2018 21:46

I thought they looked bit shoddy when I saw them in real life and opened the doors etc. Seemed a bit flimsy for the money tbh.

I've found Smeg appliances overrated, style over substance as someone said.

Buxbaum · 10/04/2018 13:56

They have a fairly small capacity given their footprint. Hardly any freezer space.

Brittanyspears · 10/04/2018 15:39

They don't have the flame retardant backing so i would avoid

ReadyMeals · 10/04/2018 15:45

Do you mean the retro style ones? We had a black one in our house when we moved it but found it too small for a family of three (even with separate freezer). It did look nice. We've put it in the garage but never use it so might stick it on gumtree!

We replaced it with an American style one in stainless steel, also Smeg. It's great! It does seem good quality to me. We got it from an eBay shop that sells slightly damaged new stock, so we paid £1000 instead of £1600. It has a little scratch on the handle.

MrsCaecilius · 10/04/2018 15:47

Look great, poor quality. Depends, as others have said, whether you value style or substance!

Notanotherottenotter · 10/04/2018 15:50

I had one for a few years, and it shed parts like a flippin’ Christmas tree. Never again.

Tulips2lips · 11/04/2018 11:23

after using a terrible smeg induction hob and seeing the performance of a friends smeg flueless fireplace I'd say no on (my view of) the brand's reputation

cherrypiemay16 · 11/04/2018 11:34

I've had loads of issues with my Smeg which I bought from new. Yes they look great but I wouldn't buy one again...

japanesegarden · 11/04/2018 13:22

The Smeg fridge freezer is the only thing I regret from when we redid our kitchen 5 years ago. Looks beautiful but crap functionality - freezes at the back and hot inside the fridge at the top. I wouldn't have another, except it's built in and nothing else is the same size, so maybe I'll have to...
