Where to live? Chertsey or Slough

Hello all,
Wish everyone well, my wife and I are looking for our 1st home. We need some advice. Please let us know what's you thought.

We are currently renting a flat in Ashford, Surrey. And we are doing house hunting in the nearby area. We are looking for a 2/3 bedroom property below £350k. I am working in London, so transportation is a key for me. We have a 2 years'old daughter, so the school and hospital are also important items in our wish list.

My wife likes two new build development, one is Trinity in Slough, the other is Chertsey Halt in Chertsey. They both have £330k two bed apartment available (are the prices fair?). Both of them have hospitals around (Upton/St Peter). We can't decide which one to choose.

People said Chertsey is a nicer place, with good schools; but Chertsey is a little hard to get to London. 80 mins by direct train, or exchange in Weybridge. And it seems many big chains (e.g. Boots, Superdrug) are not in Chertsey.

Many people said Slough is not a very nice city. The buildings does look too 1960s. But it has a very fast train to London. I have been told schools in Slough is also good. I am not sure, any comment on the schools?

I checked the crime map. It seems Slough has slightly higher crime rate.

I don't think I have enough knowledge about these two places and two developments. Could my wife and I ask your advice please? Thanks for your help and wish everyone well!

I'd go for Chertsey over Slough. Assuming you have a car there are plenty of larger towns nearby with a good choice of shops.

Chertsey. I don't know the Slough development but to be close to the station will be not such a nice area. St Peters Hospital Chertsey is not highly regarded, does it have an A and E now? Do you really need one that close by?

You could get the train to London from Woking if you lived in Chertsey. Loads of trains and only about 30 mins.

Slough town centre not great but due massive massive upgrade/rebuild and has fab transport links. Windsor/Eton close by and some decent parks (lascelles and upton court park). Grammar school borough so lots of tutoring. Some excellent primary schools.

Upton hospital isn’t very big, mainly for geriatrics. Wexham is where you’ll need to go for almost anything.

I wouldn’t live in slough if you paid me.

Slough has very good grammar schools, and very good transport links to London. But it's not a lovely place and I wouldn't choose to live there personally. It's near lovely places though! Windsor, Datchet, Eton, Bray, etc. I don't know Chertsey sorry.

Out of the two, I'd go for Chertsey, myself.

Are you dead set on one of those two though? Have you considered Woking? The town centre is undergoing a lot of redevelopment, there's a fast train direct to Waterloo that takes half an hour, and there's a fair selection of flats in your price bracket.

I’d rather Slough than Chertsey tbh-it’s a bit grim but under 20 minutes to London and has shops and a town centre with cinema etc. Chertsey has slower trains and nothing really apart from Sainsbury’s...

Look at Woking is my advice. Fast train to London. Driving distance to start Peter's and royal Surrey. Schools are generally fine to good.

Slough is pretty grotty, Chertsey better.

Why a new build development, service charges must be high?

DH & I moved out of Slough years ago because of the crime rate. With apologies to anyone who lives there, it wasn't a nice place then and I can't imagine it's improved. We bought there because of the fast train to London, but moved away when we had a family. I know nothing about Chertsey so I can't comment on that.

Chertsey. It's near lots of lovely places. St. Peters hospital is fine. Fab birth centre! Chertsey also has a big Aldi which has just opened and a lovely pre-school at the childrens centre if you can get in.

I have lived near Chertsey, and have been to Slough, I wouldn't go back there. Chertsey is preferable if you can't find anywhere else.

Thanks a lot for everyone's advice. I notices some friends mentioned Woking. Any particular area of Woking? My wife like new build, she likes everything is new. I personally ok with 2nd hand property. If we can find a nice and clear 2nd hand property, I think I can persuade my wife (or is it a common delusion which husband always hold? )
