If you have a wood burner - what surround have you got?

And also what hearth?

I wanted a lovely limestone mantelpiece/surround but I'm not sure it looks quite right with a wood burner. DH wants a wooden mantlepiece/shelf because it's cheaper

It's a new-ish house but I don't want a really modern style.

Ooh I would love to see pictures of everyone’s wood burners!

Kingsclerelass · 28/03/2018 15:01

Rose brick fireplace with an oak beam across the top. But to be fair, the surround was already there when I moved in.

All I did was take out the leaky gas fake-wood-burner and replace it with a real one. My house is mid-Victorian I think.

Ours is freestanding as it was fitted where there was no fireplace. The flue goes up and angles out through the wall (and into a newly fitted flue pipe) and it is standing on a large slab of limestone.

Ours isn't very exciting!! I love having a wood burner though

No surround, just built into the wall

We have a painted reclaimed surround and a brick fireplace.

Fire place discovered when decorating. Wood burner installed, it’s very warm

We have what you want. No p8c as we have a cage round it due to toddler. It's like this but our burner is cream not black. I prefer black but we bought the house with it already installed.

I will say that it is difficult to keep the limestone clean. Especially if you have a limestone base for the burner. Ours has burn marks now. So definitely do a different base, red brick or something.

Thanks very much for all the pics!

@liquidrevolution - that's pretty much what I want! Fireplace man said go for a non-limestone hearth as they mark. So thinking black as brick may be a bit rustic for the house.

@RestingBitchFace - we are renting at the moment and that's what they have. I love the fire, but I feel its missing something.

No surround as it's free standing. The hearth is made of strengthened glass or something similar, so it's completely clear.

Here's a link to something similar to what I have glass hearth

Granite hearth; oak shelf over; just plastered and painted around the fireplace opening.

Wood shelf only. Think the hearth is granite.

@nocturnalnightmare Don't want to be patronising, but wanted to check whether you've confirmed the required "distance to combustible materials" for your particular stove? Storing longs that close is a no-no for many (most) stoves (minimum clearance is usually at least 30cm). Don't want your house to burn down!

bouncydog · 28/03/2018 18:52

Granite and hardwood with thick granite hearth.

A cast iron surround and slate hearth. I wouldn’t have the slate again tbh. It marks and has to be wiped constantly.

SpadesOfGlory · 28/03/2018 18:59

Black polished granite hearth and surround and now a floating wooden beam mantle too (also don't have a lamp beside it anymore, that was strictly temporary while we bought furniture lol)

This is ours- it had an oak beam above

The beams are actually concrete! Quite sad it's getting too warm for a fire now!
