I've never had carpets fitted before so I've got no idea what I should be paying get one fitted?

What's a good price per metre?

Dc's room carpet is coming to the end and I've found a decent remnant that will do the job. The room is 3x4m.

What depth underlay should I be getting?

It depends on the quality of the carpet. I just bought a 8m x 5m width piece of felt backed carpet for £6/m and fitting was £50, so £98 total. But, that was because we’re selling our house and I wanted it to look clean and tidy, I wouldn’t have chosen that if I wanted it to last years. Our previous cheap felt backed carpet lasted 4 years but was beige in a house of children and dogs.

Oh, my point there was that if it’s felt backed you don’t need underlay but it would be noisy upstairs I expect.

Thanks - the one I've found isn't felt backed but seems it's best to pay for the best underlay. The carpet is a wool mix so hopefully it should last a while.

We've just gone for Tredaire Dreamwalk 11mm underlay.

Fitting should be inexpensive for one room. We're paying something like £600 for 5 rooms, 2 flights of stairs and a landing.
