What areas of Manchester are nice?

We want to move but can’t seem to find or agree on an area. We want to be within 30 minutes commute of city centre and would like the area to feel safe and have some cafes etc. Any ideas?

We could go upto 400k but would prefer not to. From what we have seen there isn’t much in didsbury for that. We don’t like chorlton but did have a look as it’s a little cheaper

Not that concerned about style of property as long as it’s a house not flat. Hopefully 3+bedrooms and 2 bathrooms woth some outside space

Follow the metrolink lines out - Bury /edenfield/ rawtenstall has some nice areas, housing costs are ok.

What didn’t you like about chorlton as that would initially seem to be an obvious choice. And where do you live at the moment (trying to gauge your nice-ometer) Smile

I'd try Levenshulme, been here 12 years, area has dramatically improved. Lots of small bars etc opening up. Direct train to Manchester that takes just six minutes. So much more for your money than Chorlton. If you're interested I'd go and see Edward Mellor estate agents. They are amazing!

We don’t want to be further than 30 minutes from work so I think bury is too far.
We have looked in sale, stretford, didsbury. Heard good things about Monton but no properties we like are for sale st the moment

Sale,Timperley and Altrincham all nice places to live with good schools and transport links.

Currently in prestwich and just can’t seem to like it.
I find chorlton a bit hipster and have been put off by a colleague who lives there telling me about multiple burglaries.

Edward Mellor are rip off bastards who favour their cash/buy to let customers by a country mile! If op is turning nose up at Chorlton I doubt she'll like Levenshulme (said with love as an ex-longsightian!)

I found Edward Mellor to be fantastic and they helped us find our home which was neither a BTL or a cash purchase. Chorlton is overpriced for what it is plus there are real issues with gangs/burglaries and anti-social behaviour.

Mirrorx it's definitely worth a look. It's often overlooked because it used to be really run down but the improvement over the past few years has been fantastic. New cafes/bars opening plus there is the Antique's Village and countless local parks. I wouldn't live anywhere else Smile. The prices here are so much lower than Chorlton etc so much so that former Chorltonites have moved in to the area.

Then the Mcr market must have changed a lot recently - i dealt with EM both in my property job and privately - and they were 2 headed beast. I knew they had particular properties on their books as I knew of the seller and they upfront lied to me about whether house was still for sale / had any offers - repeatedly!

Have you looked at the Heatons? I can’t remember the order of expensiveness/desirability, but there’s H Mersey, H Moor, H Norris etc, I might have left one out. I think Heaton Mersey might be the nicest
(we live in Sale, moved from Pendlebury)

Do you have children OP (so need to consider schools?) or are you simply looking for a decent house in a good location with a bit of cafe culture?

Timperley is a good option (great access to city centre via tram, and on the doorstep for Altrincham for cafes and restaurants but slightly cheaper than Altrincham) and Urmston (quick train). Both have the benefit of Trafford if schools are important.

Do you need schools? You need to be aware that pockets of South Manchester have insufficient primary school places. And if looking at Trafford you need to form a view about selective education.

Urmston is nice. Good schools, train into city centre, close to Trafford Centre, nice bars & restaurants.

Pp missed heaton chapel they're lovely! I'd give levenshulme a swerve I grew up there and still pass through regularly. If you've got 400k to spend you really do t need to be there!

Timperley is probably your best bet. Catchment area of Altrincham girls and boy’s grammar, on the metrolink line, more affordable than Altrincham or hale. You may still struggle to find something at that price but if you keep looking you will! I grew up there and it was good.

YY I’ve heard lots of good things about Urmston (but ultimately didn’t look there as we wanted to be on a tram line)
