What areas of Manchester are nice?

We want to move but can’t seem to find or agree on an area. We want to be within 30 minutes commute of city centre and would like the area to feel safe and have some cafes etc. Any ideas?

I missed out Bramhall.

Can anyone tell me more about urmston? Specifically which parts are good and if there are any areas to avoid?

Ahn come across to Sheffield, lol! Seriously, I have lots of friends that way and they reckon Urmston or Timperley. Depends on what kind of vibe and facilities are important to you really.

Heaton Moor and Heaton Chapel are nice - hMoor best of the Heatons imo

Train to Manchester is regular and quick, and if the biscuit factory is still at levenshulme there then some days the train fills with the beautiful aroma of jammy dodgers.

@Mirrorxx - there's no real areas to avoid in Urmston, I don't think. It's not massive so no really 'dodgy' areas.

The shops, bars & restaurants are generally clustered in the streets & roads around the railway station. Good variety - Indian, Chinese, tapas, Greek, Turkish, Italian.

Eden Square has a Sainsburys, Lidl, Iceland, Costa, a nice cafe / bar and a few other shops. But it's not that far to a big Asda near the Trafford Centre.

Trains are every half hour, generally pretty good but a bit crowded at rush hour (I can still get a seat though). £6.10 peak return adult fare. I've never tried the buses.

Schools are good. DS got into the Grammar school this year & loves it.

Urmston is really nice. I worked there for a while. Has a great centre and lots of nice bars. Good schools. Not got the tram though.

The tram is coming fairly close soon. They're building between Salford Quays and the Trafford Centre and the line is coming up the main road into Urmston. Not sure where the stops will be though.

Mirror - this may well be out of date now but the desirable areas of Urmston were :

  1. The network of roads off Church Road just outside of the centre (so Westmorland Road, Carlton Rd, Grangethorpe Road etc). That end of Church Road has some lovely big Victorian Edwardian houses
  1. Also the area around St Mary's church in Davyhulme, so Vicarage Road, Entwistle Road and parts of Davyhulme Road / Moorside Road.

Then I'd say there are lots of just nice, ordinary areas with family houses - the roads between Canterbury Road and Lostock Road (Salisbury / Exeter) near Davyhulme Park, across Crofts Bank Rd (off Hayswater Road and the part of Winchester Road that's closest to Urmston).

I don't know Flixton as well so there might be parts worth considering there. In terms of areas to avoid - historically the estate closest to the motorway near the Trafford Centre (so Shetland way and roads around there) weren't as sought after, and neither was Broadway and the roads off there. But like I say I may be 20+ years out of date!

Hope that helps.

And we have a nice artisan market on the first Saturday of every month that's very popular.

If you're considering Monton then definitely look at areas like South Swinton, Worsley, Boothstown. You can get to to Monton High Street in about 5 mins but won't be paying the massively inflated Monton house prices, and arguable Worsley and Boothstown are much nicer in their own right anyway!
