What areas of Manchester are nice?

Mirrorxx · 16/02/2018 14:55

We want to move but can’t seem to find or agree on an area. We want to be within 30 minutes commute of city centre and would like the area to feel safe and have some cafes etc. Any ideas?

I was gonna say prestwich but you already live there. Funnily, I've never been tempted to move from north to 'posh' south manchester Grin

Sparklesdontshine · 16/02/2018 15:23

Urmston and Flixton are nice, I have lived in both

firstboard · 16/02/2018 15:25

@Mirrox - Do you want 30 min commute by car or public transport?
Do you have any children?

Mirrorxx · 16/02/2018 15:28

Preferable commute by public transport. Happy with tram or train.
No dc currently but will Be ttc once we have moved so schools are a consideration for the future.

Heaton moor is lovely! There's a train station and trains to Manchester are very frequent, plus it only takes ten minutes.

wejammin · 16/02/2018 15:29

Stretford has good schools and the area around Victoria Park has lovely houses. You'd get a lot for £400k. No nightlife though, you have to go to Chorlton or Urmston (only 5 mins in a taxi). It's on the metro and near the motorway.

Amber0685 · 16/02/2018 15:31

Elsewhere Park

sinceyouask · 16/02/2018 15:37

Levenshulme is brilliant and does not deserve it's dubious reputation. It's far less hipster wanker than Chorlton (many of my friends live in Chorlton and I love them dearly but don't get the appeal, certainly not when you factor in the inflated rents and house prices). Chorlton has a higher burglary rate than Leve, too lovinmanchester.com/news/manchester/chorlton-has-the-highest-burglary-rate-in-manchester.

You can't buy the house linked above though op, because I am going to win the lotto tonight and buy it myself. Sorry!

Mirrorxx · 16/02/2018 15:39

I think we will go have a proper look at levenshulme and Monton. At the moment there is nothing suitable in other areas we have looked at

The market will be back on from Saturday 3rd March ( www.levymarket.com ), it's always worth a visit.

namastayinbed · 16/02/2018 15:44

I lived in levy over a decade ago - glad to hear it's on the up!

SporkInTheToaster · 16/02/2018 15:48

Chorlton is very much a game of two halves. Gentrified ££ bits (‘Chorlton Village’?) and then the rough as arse rest of it.

SporkInTheToaster · 16/02/2018 15:49

nama, I was there 20yrs ago and it was Fort Apache Shock

BertrandRussell · 16/02/2018 15:51

We have family in Chorlton Village. Very nice.

wowfudge · 16/02/2018 16:12

If you don't like Chorlton I can't see you liking Levenshulme OP. The Heatons would be a better bet or Monton. Also consider Stockport and further out Woodsmoor, Davenport, Disley, High Lane and New Mills all worth a look and all 30 mins or under on the train to Manchester. We live near New Mills and love it - the town has cafés, a micro brewery, pubs and is a short hop into Manchester with the Peak District on the doorstep. There's even a bus to the airport which means we don't need to take taxis or pay for airport parking.

MissFritton65 · 16/02/2018 18:36

I'd consider Marple or Romiley as easy access to Manchester on the train but great village feel and decent schoolsized plus parks and Peak District on your doorstep.

NewBallsPlease00 · 17/02/2018 08:41

Look at train links too so places like knutsford or wilmslow as options/ both v lovely for families

wowfudge · 17/02/2018 08:43

Knutsford and Wilmslow are out of the OP's budget.

namechangedtoday15 · 17/02/2018 11:17

Nowhere is out of budget (Knutsford, Wilmslow, Altrincham even Hale) but the choice is much more limited in those places for £400k but your money will go (much) further in some of the other places mentioned.

wowfudge · 17/02/2018 11:18

Fair point namechanged

ChikiTIKI · 17/02/2018 11:29

Look in the heatons. 3 trains per hour to Piccadilly 10 min journey, also there's something like 18 buses an hour down the A6 in to town during peak times. Great transport links. Heaton Mersey is near east didsbury tram stop too (although I don't really rate the trams)

CalleighDoodle · 17/02/2018 11:37

Ramsbottom. should be less than 30 mins to manchester. lovely community, shops, cafes, bars, cheese restaurant, great schools.

CalleighDoodle · 17/02/2018 11:39

Bolton should be that commute too. Lostock is an affluent area.

Faze84 · 17/02/2018 11:46

Id second Romiley or Marple. I think your money will go a bit further under Stockport than Manchester. They are 20 mins on train and Peak District on your doorstep. How about Heaton Moor? Its a great atmosphere. What about Bramhall or Cheadle (in parts)

I lived in Levenshulme and although its improving parts of it are still a shit hole. Been the victim of crime there more than once. House/Car/on person.

GeorgeTheHippo · 17/02/2018 11:56

Urmston?
