House sale - do you leave your curtain poles?

We have sold our house and I am going through the paperwork this evening regarding the inventory. Do people usually leave the curtain poles or do they take them? I want to be reasonable to our buyer and whatever is 'the norm' if there is such a thing? Grin

For context we are going to a new build so will have to either buy new curtain poles or take ours but taking them seems a bit mean?

will the curtains fit your new house? If not, no point. Same with curtain poles. bloody awful things anyway

you are legally obliged to leave light fittings that work, with a bulb, but all else is up for negotation.

Ours were left. They were fugly but useful x

I left them and all of the curtains and blinds in my last house, we didn’t charge. They wouldn’t fit (or suit) here. There were quite a few pairs, some off the peg lined ones and a couple of expensive naice ones for large window spans. We moved over 10 years ago and they still have them up, so they weren’t a stop gap.

If we moved again, I’d leave everything here as it’s all made to measure.

FluffyWuffy100 · 06/02/2018 19:36

I don’t understand why you would take them?

So annoying to unscrew and make good the walls. And you’ve created a massive annoyance for the buyers who then have to put up new curtain poles.

When I bought my first house they left all curtains and poles, including a pair of lovely made to measure ones for the bay window. I replaced a couple of the bedrooms with black out curtains but kept everything else and sold the house with all curtains and rails included. They still have the bay window curtain up 24 months later!

The house I bought had all curtain poles left but they took some curtains - just the sitting room and dining room ones. Since the poles were left it was very easy to get new curtains up.

Leave the poles, take the curtains. There was a long thread about this before Christmas.

We have been through everything. We are just taking our bedroom curtains as they match our duvet/throw and scatter cushions and my daughters bedroom curtains as they have all boys so won’t want fairy curtains.

We had been planning to leave ours, as well as a few other bits that weren't included in the inventory (curtains etc). However, our buyers and their mortgage company fucked us about so much (including insisting that we pay for some kind of insurance that their lender was demanding Confused), in the end we took absolutely everything we could that we hadn't listed in the inventory Blush. Sold them on eBay to make some of our money back!

If they hadn't been such arses though, we definitely would have left them.

OutyMcOutface · 06/02/2018 20:37

A curtain pole is a fitting, not a fixture and as such goes with you unless otherwise agreed.

Viviene · 06/02/2018 21:00

I was really nice to my sellers and they still took everything including lightbulbs but left moldy blinds.
Fuckers.

Presume you're filling in the Fittings & Contents Form? It's completely up to you to take or leave what you'd like on that form but you need to be clear. Unless there are specific expensive things or you've spoken to the buyer about it, I wouldn't bother writing prices on the form. If you want/need the curtains or poles, you are free to take them: if you don't, I'd leave them for free. I wouldn't expect someone to take curtain tracks but poles can be different as they are more expensive so take them if you need them but as another PP has said, you have to minimise damage when you remove items. If you are taking light fittings, you have to leave a working flex and bulb.
