I fear we get the 'large house effect' when tradesmen quote for us. Does this sum sound fair for guttering cleaning?

So the house is large. Main house is around 4000 sq foot - I am quoting the size to give an indication of the amount of guttering involved. I would take a photo but that would be rather identifying! I could be unreasonably suspicious and untrusting (it is my default position to be wary of people) but I do worry we get 'large house inflation' when tradesmen quote for us (i.e. they can afford it so we'll inflate the price a bit).

Does £220 sound reasonable for:
Cleaning the guttering of leaves and debris
Making good some guttering where there are a couple of leaks and wonky bits
Cleaning some small patches of moss from the roof (there isn't much since the house is only 3 years old)
Slotting in some roof tiles which have come loose

All of the above is on the main roof of the 4000 feet sq house.

We also have a triple garage with accommodation over which just needs gutter clearing (its only been up a year - no loose tiles or moss)

The chap concerned does get on the roof to thoroughly clean it - none of this hosing it down from below. He has said it will take 'us' (so I am assuming him and one other) the best part of a mornings work....so to me the £220 sounds fair? He did seem okay and quite professional

However I remember a thread on here where people were saying it costs them £30 - 60 to have their guttering cleaned? I would expect mine to be more as there is more guttering to do.....but I just hope that I am getting value for money? (I think tradesmen can also tell that I am clueless)

Seems fair enough to me , considering the size of the roof.

StormTreader · 31/01/2018 13:49

Youre not just getting cleaning though, youre getting repairs as well.
Sounds reasonable to me, in fact it sounds pretty good.

Sprig1 · 31/01/2018 13:51

I think that sounds pretty good. You are lucky that you can find someone who will do it without scaffolding, that's what we struggle with as our house is quite tall.

nonwonderwoman · 31/01/2018 13:53

Sounds like a bargain to me. You have a lot of roof/guttering to clean and also some repair work.

Bluntness100 · 31/01/2018 13:54

I get what you mean, I get this. I got some quotes in to paint the outside timber frame beams, quotes were in the region of 2.5 to 3k. One company sent me a quote for 9.5 k. No shit. 9.5k. I nearly fell of the sofa.

However that seems a thoroughly reasonable price for what you're getting done.

QueenCity · 31/01/2018 13:58

That sounds cheap to me!

DesperateHouseknife · 31/01/2018 14:00

Bargain for that scope. Perhaps he was less impressed with your house than you thought.

ajandjjmum · 31/01/2018 14:03

That cost sounds fine for me.

Know what you mean though - my kids always got taxis to drop them off down the lane, as there was always a 'supplement' otherwise!

hmcAsWas · 31/01/2018 14:05

"Perhaps he was less impressed with your house than you thought." Miaow!

Thanks folks - I shall go ahead with the work. He did seem like a decent bloke and I am reassured that you think it sounds good value. I thought it seemed fair too but have trouble trusting my own judgement sometimes

Seems like a good quote given the cleaning, as well as repairs

LapdanceShoeshine · 31/01/2018 14:45

We had about 40’ of gutters cleared of crud last year by the company that fitted them 3-4 years ago (there was a massive overflow; we’d had the roof reslated since & I thought there might be a problem with the fall)

Anyway they charged £36 just for that (& I provided a bucket & a rubber glove!). So yours sounds like excellent value Smile

LapdanceShoeshine · 31/01/2018 14:47

(It was 2 men & they were here half an hour tops)

Buglife · 31/01/2018 14:49

It sounds like they are doing loads for that much, cleaning gutters and fixing tiles as well as guttering! I’d be pleased with that price for my modest little roof.

LadyinCement · 31/01/2018 14:49

I have had exactly your work done and it cost £600. There were four blokes here all day scrubbing moss off the roof, clearing guttering and repairing leaks.

redmarkone · 01/02/2018 09:57

yes, sounds good.

Maria1982 · 01/02/2018 10:01

I think it sounds good value actually - for
cleaning and some repairs for a big house.

Allthebestnamesareused · 01/02/2018 14:16

Sounds cheap - we paid £360

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 01/02/2018 14:33

Sounds like a very reasonable quote to me.

Bluelady · 01/02/2018 18:44

Cheap, who are they? They can come here any time.

TheDailyMailLovesTheEUReally · 02/02/2018 18:52

If you are near me then send them round here! A really good price for that work.

LambMadras · 02/02/2018 19:10

I think that's a lot. My builder is skilled and amazing and only charges £170 a day for odd jobs.
£220 for a mornings work is a bit much I personally think.

Dairymilkmuncher · 02/02/2018 19:19

I was quoted £100 + vat for a tiny house, gutter cleaning and cleaning the area around the gutters. I was completely shocked by that our house is teeny but that's the cost...
