Black granite/quartz worktops - MN jury - are they now dated?

I am trying to win over my DH. I want a mix of pale and wood cupboards and cream or light coloured quartz worktops (with a bit of wood for the breakfast bar). He wants maple cupboards and black quartz/granite which is basically what we had in our last house.

I think black worktops are a bit dated now, but I'm not sure.

We are in a very hard water area so we will have an ongoing battle with limescale which clearly is more visible on black worksurfaces. DH says pale surfaces always look dirty. I am also not sure how pale cupboards and a pale worktop will look together.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this dilemma.

I'm not a fan of polished black granite as it does look tired and is awful to keep looking nice. We're in the process of building a kitchen right now and to my annoyance, black granite was the only material aside form a really pricey quartz that we could get in a slab long enough for our 3m island. I'm not too upset though as we're going with the textured kind, which actually has quite a different and fresh look and feel and is way easier to keep looking nice (no water marks, etc) but is the sameish price as polished granite. It seems like the new big thing here where we live as all the showrooms now have that instead of regular granite or quartz. Hopefully it will look okay.

The other look I am tired of seeing is the white and grey veined marble (or faux marble quartz or ceramic) with a white or grey kitchen.

I've shown DH the thread. He is beginning to change his mind over to my way of thinking...although he did think that not being able to see the lines on the jug was a rather poor excuse for not having a black worktop Grin
