Ikea furniture

Hello
Looking into getting a handyman to build our flat pack furniture (not been delivered yet) but considering doing it myself.

Is Ikea stuff generally quite easy to build? I would of thought it should be straight forward?

Anyone had good / bad experiences?

Ikea is straightforward to build and the instructions are normally good and easy to follow

We just went to IKEA today and our local store (not in the UK) was offering a deliver and put together service for a fairly reasonable price. You can check to see how complicated the instructions are for your furniture before you buy them (eg I looked at the beds online and the one we bought had a 16 page instruction booklet, some were up to 60 pages long!).

I've never found IKEA that difficult so long as you take your time and check each step carefully (it's when you go wrong and have to take it all apart that things get really difficult).

It's very easy, so long as you RTFM.

Very easy indeed, all the furniture in my flat was bought in one go from Ikea and I assembled most of it on my own. I needed an extra pair of hands with the tall, heavy stuff like wardrobes.

Yes, it's easy.

But you MUST follow the instructions to the letter. Do not skim read or skip any steps otherwise it'll fall apart or not even fix together.

Once you've done one, the rest are easier and you get quicker at it.

The MALM chest of drawers should be ok?

It's very easy - but you must look at the instructions first before starting - not try to put the item together without even glancing at the instructions, because it's often meant to be done in a certain order. It's so annoying having to dissemble and then reassemble the item just because you didn't look at the pictures in the leaflet. Often one is in a hurry, eager to get started, and skip the step of counting the screws (to see that they were all delivered) and skip taking a look at in what order it is meant to be assembled.

It's only if you buy kitchen furniture (cupboards, sink, etc.) that things start to get tricky. Any ordinary piece of furniture is easy to put together.

It is really not difficult. If you've never built flatpack furniture before you may take a bit of time to get your head around it but it is not complicated. Some of the bigger / heavier things do need 2 people though.

It’s easy to assemble and easy to affix to the wall as long as you can handle a drill and know what type of wall you’re dealing with.

Malm drawers are really simple to put together. Admittedly we've got about 5 sets in our house so we've had practice, but DD's 3-drawer version took us half an hour to put up last week.

YY to suggestions of reading instructions carefully.

The trickiest bit is working out which runner goes on which side, but that's not really even that tricky as they only fit one way!

As a veteran of putting MFI (remember them?) furniture together I can confirm that Ikea furniture is a doddle to build. I bought a desk for DD last year, and it was so satisfying to see everything slot together perfectly.

You can download the instructions in advance from the website and read them before you buy.

If you get stuck you can probably find a you tube video. For the Malm drawers you need a hammer and a screwdriver if I remember correctly. Everything else is provided.

My 9 year old built his malm chest of drawers- with me helping instruct and do the final tighten- so yes it is pretty straightforward - though it takes ages - hours - that bit i hate.

yes as pp says YOU MUST ATTACH IT TO THE WALL. Several toddler have died from it falling on them.

LOL! I can’t believe you’re asking if you need a builder’s help to put together a Malm chest of drawers. How helpless are you?

For £6 they sell an excellent cordless rechargeable screwdriver with all the bits for all their furniture. It is brilliant!

Here is a chap on YouTube putting the 6 drawer Malm together to give you an idea of how easy it is.

To be fair, Ikea is pretty fool proof, just follow the instructions carefully. Sometimes they make pieces so they can only go one way round.

My then 9 year old put a 2 drawer Malm together following the instructions with me hovering.

There are loads of people demonstrating building them but this gives you a starting point.

We have just built a triple wardrobe, three large chests of drawers and a bedside table from Ikea recently and it was really very easy. Although the triple wardrobe was a two man job. I built a storage um... thingy.. myself while DH was busy making the tea getting ready to build it!

Ikea furniture is so simple that couples can do it WITHOUT falling out and divorcing .
I'd like to see people claim the same for B&Q or Argos stuff.

And yes, do attach them to the wall. We have malm and I didn't believe they could just fall like that but once I pulled out 3 of the 4 drawers they did tip! Too easily. Absolutely fanbloodytastic drawers though. Look great and are sturdy as hell.
