DIY kitchens - Helmsley anyone?

Hello
We think we have decided on a Helmsley kitchen from DIY kitchens. Has anyone else got this one and if so would you mind posting some pictures? It’s not available to view in the showroom so we are buying offline without seeing it (although I will order a sample door).

Going for a F&B painted finish.
Any advice/tips/pics most welcome! Thanks

Ooh I didn't realise it was literally anything. The man said it would only be an extra £400 or so in terms of price. But it does add quite a bit to lead times.

aisteb · 14/09/2018 16:23

I think it's the colour that makes all the difference, you can see any cheaper kitchen in navy and it looks good imho :) Did you take any pictures?

My concern is whether I will feel the same about navy in 5 years time when it is no longer on trend Grin But I will repaint if that happens.

I would so go on a kitchen break if I didn't have a toddler and if I had a car. Now all the money that would be spent on a car is going to be spent on this kitchen Blush

aisteb · 14/09/2018 16:29

Bespoke would be a lot more than that for the kitchen our size, works out £1,5k more for us (all cabinets will be around £7,5k) and thus brings it close to Units online prices. I definitely want dark navy so getting bespoke if we go for Helmsley. UO do a couple of different blues so hoping to like one of them as they have better sizes cabinets for what we need. But it will literally come down to the colour for me, I really do think the colour is what makes the kitchen.

friskybivalves · 14/09/2018 17:06

I came on the train! No car! Lots of kids in the showroom today too. And they picked me up in their posh car.

I will try to post pics but I am truly rubbish at this sort of thing.

Re bespoke cost our units are currently coming out at £7k and he said to add £400 or so to that for our own paint? Maybe was being optimistic.

friskybivalves · 14/09/2018 17:28

Not the most amazing pic but it shows from L-R Hague blue, à Helmsley door, a norton in alabaster and a Stanbury in mussel.

Oh don't tempt me, though I think it would be a 7 hour one way train trip for me as Iam on the South Coast.

I honestly compared Helmsley vs Bespoke Helmsley and the difference was big, maybe I have miscalculated something Confused

Close up of the Helmsley dust trap beading.

aisteb · 14/09/2018 17:34

Thanks for the picture! I have read on Mumsnet that Norton middle panel was recessed deeper but they all look the same. If we didn't have some inframe dining room furniture already I would be seriously tempted by Norton.

friskybivalves · 14/09/2018 17:34

The virtual showroom tour shows off the stanbury island far better than my pictures.

The norton display does it no favours IRL - makes the drawers look like a filing cabinet. And the helmsley has been painted in a quite interesting Confused shade of purple which again I think is not showing it off to best effect!

I forgot to check on panel depth but they all looked so similar that if there was a difference it must be so minuscule as to be not relevant.

I do love in frames. I always think they look more expensive. Which is why I was totally unprepared for being stopped totally in my tracks by the Stanbury. Not the norton - it looks cheap and nasty in the showroom display and that's why I'm wondering about going darker.
There was something a bit twee and less chic about the Helmsley in comparison. A bit mannered if you know what I mean. But you know what - I will probably wake up tomorrow and be back to square one!

aisteb · 14/09/2018 19:08

Hey just to throw a spanner in the works, looking if I have missed some local Multiwood retailer I could visit, I found www.onlinekitchensuk.co.uk
and they do some of the same inframe ranges as Units Online (Petworth and Baystone being the ones I am looking at as I too think that cockbeading detail on Helmsley is too much, friskybivalves photo proves that to me).

For a quick comparison I just looked up prices for a couple of the same units - tall appliance housing, sink unit, highline unit and magic corner, and each one was at least £50 cheaper than units online, and magic corner half the price! They seem to offer a free design service too so I am going to contact them with my plan to see if they offer all the units I need as this might work out as the cheapest option Shock Their unit spec seems to be the same too and they use the same brand internal fittings (Blum and Kessebohmer).

Which is interesting as on the phone today Units Online told me they were the cheapest supplier of Multiwood and Burbridge doors in the UK. I guess their doors might be the cheapest, but not their units..

Has anyone heard of Online Kitchens UK before?

Rosita · 15/09/2018 08:55

No, I haven’t heard of them. Start another thread in case - someone will have!
Thanks friskybivalves for your thoughts. The plot thickens! Interested that you were so taken by the Stanbury. It’s MDF isn’t it? Personally I’ve decided against MDF as I’m just not keen on the feel. It can look great though.
Your picture is really helpful - what is door in The Hague Blue on the left?
Anyone else been dreaming about kitchens etc? I have for the last week or so. Ridiculous.
Please let me know how you get on with pricing at this new discovery aisteb. I had given up on Petworth as too expensive but may have to reconsider. Although, I actually still like the Helmsley from the pictures here so once I’ve seen it on Monday, will know if it’s still a contender.
I’ve realized the frame size is really important to me and I think I might find the Norton too wide in a whole kitchen.

Janet25 · 15/09/2018 10:17

I can’t find any reviews of online kitchens UK and they aren’t on Trustpilot either. Their Facebook page is mainly targeted marketing and no interaction or reviews on there either.

aisteb · 15/09/2018 10:38

@Janet25 OK that sounds suspicious, maybe I should not bother with them then..

Rosita · 16/09/2018 20:12

In Yorkshire! Ready to hit DIY tomorrow. Is it weird I’m so excited?

Janet25 · 16/09/2018 20:30

Haha good luck and enjoy :) I've just emailed them over our plans for a quote on the Stanbury in Hague Blue

aisteb · 16/09/2018 21:05

I'm excited for you haha.

I was in Wickes today picking up some paint samples (apparently Dulux trade have a one week only 20% off sale next week so need to choose wall colours) and they had a shaker kitchen on display where they have used end panels to create the inframe look. Looked very nice.

So if you realise you like Norton this could be a cheaper way to create the look. I am deliberating this option now, the price difference is probably very tempting. Howdens have done this in some photos and describe it here sort of half way down the page www.howdens.com/getting-started/inspiration/get-the-look/rustic-shaker

I have read somewhere that it is best practice to use just two cabinet widths in one kitchen but I have no other way but to end up using a combination of 40cm, 60cm, 80cm and probably one 50cm and one slim 15cm pull out. Could you please keep an eye out if any of the display kitchens have varying widths and whether that looks stupid? Blush

Rosita · 17/09/2018 18:41

Hi all. Just got back home from the epic trip to Yorkshire. It was well worth it and I've pretty much made up my mind!
So, for me it's still total love for Helmsley. It was everything I thought it would be and I still absolutely love it. In my opinion, the cockbeading looks much worse in a close up but overall, in the whole kitchen, it was lovely. Having seen the Devol and Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch showrooms, Helmsley is without a doubt the closest to those due to the slimness of the frame and overall look. HMK of C also have cockbeading (though you can have it without) and I had liked it then. I was apprehensive today after all the comments on the thread, but in spite of the awful color choices on the display, it still looked very chic and the most bespoke of all the DIY kitchens.
Obviously this is only my opinion, but I did not care for Norton at all. The frame is just too wide and chunky for my liking. For similar reasons, I didn't much care for Stanbury either, though the display was indeed stunning as friskybivalves said. It was definitely the best one in the showroom. Great choices of colour and worktops plus good layout. Whilst the kitchens themselves look good, I think they could definitely work on displaying them better. They are building a new showroom on the field next door so hopefully will do so in future.
Norton is definitely 105mm frame and Helmsley 74 so there really is a difference. Burbidge Petworth is 90 and Langton (both inframes) is 76. Burbidge Barnes is 90 and Second Nature Mornington (both shakers) is also 90. Having seen Mornington last week, I was left feeling like it could be a second choice if I didn't like Helmsley, but I was unsure about it and I think it's the same reason I wasn't so keen on Petworth when I saw it. I just really prefer the very slim frame look and 90 is too wide for me. But for those of you who are keen, I got a quote emailed this morning with very good prices on all the Burbidge kitchens which was comparable or perhaps cheaper than Units Online. It was from Kitchens and Worktops Ltd in Sutton if that helps any of you.
Other things I found out that might be useful:
The online planner tends to over calculate end panels etc so the actual price is probably cheaper than it seems.
Some people match the carcass colour to the door (only works if you are going with a stock colour though) and then can do away with the need for end panels.
They will make pretty much anything in Helmsley even if the planner says its not available i.e. le Mans units. They can use appliances doors to put on special size bin units etc. They basically told me I just need to tell them what I what and they will figure out how to make it happen.

aisteb - I had a look at the different sizes on display and there is often a mix of different width units. However, it seems that what makes it work well is have as much symmetry as possible on a row.

I loved the F&B skimming stone which they had on one kitchen, seems like a cross between the light grey and cashmere. I think the person who originally posted about the colours matching the F&B ones had it spot on. I spent quite a while comparing them in different lights and they seem like a match.

Right....exhausted now. Need wine.

Rosita · 17/09/2018 18:44

p.s. I have photos but am useless at both photography and IT so can't upload them! Will try later.

Rosita · 17/09/2018 18:48

Oh and another thought, personally I think that the beading looks worse on the sample door because you don't have the gap that would be there on a real cabinet. When I can post these photos I took which are close ups of the display cabinets, you can see what I mean.

aisteb · 17/09/2018 19:31

Thank you for all the information. The frame width is not something that has crossed my mind but I will probably be obsessing about it now 😅 I know with DIY kitchen you can order doors and return them for a refund but with Units online you cannot so I am dubious whether to order doors from both companies to compare, don't want to waste money Confused.

Thank you for looking at the widths of the cabinets too, I need to carefully re-think my kitchen plans.

Looking forward to your photos.

4yearsnosleep · 18/09/2018 12:41

@aisteb did you get any pics today f that? I'm planning on using end panels between each units but I'd love to see what else can be done! I've googled but can't find anything

Rosita · 18/09/2018 14:08

Oh wow, that actually worked. I've been trying to upload the photos and failing for ages. I'll try some more now!
So that photo above is the Helmsley close up in Skimming Stone.
These ones here are more of the same.
