Anyone used the space above the stairs to create a storage area?

We have a big void above our stairs and as space is limited on our landing I'd like to create a storage area with access from the landing. Could do with some inspiration though as all the pictures on the internet are for cupboards accessed from a box room/bedroom.

My first house had a big deep cupboard above the stairs. You could reach to put things in on the bottom shelf from the stairs but needed to use a ladder across from the top of the stairs to properly use it. Great for things needed occasionally.

Do you have a void above the hallway (.g. no head height worries), or is the void above lower down stairs?

I'm debating a few designs for this at the moment, because we have a big void over the stairs/hallway too, and the only reason I was happy to accept the third small bedroom is that we had it looked over and you can build a big cupboard out over the stairs.

Could you build a cupboard that is 50:50 backing onto a room/the landing? Then you can have an airing cupboard and a built in wardrobe.

Our house has the over stairs boxed in in a diagonal shape (like an upside down under stairs cupboard), with access from a bedroom. The space is useful (although it's very deep so hard to keep organised) but it was hard to get furniture up the stairs. I'd quite like to rip out but it is waaaay down the priority list.

Do you mean like this and this sort of thing, or more of a full cupboard like here?

Yes Sock that's it in the video. Thank you. Now I've got something tangible to show a carpenter. My thinking is to have pull out shelves so I don't have to crawl in to reach the back Grin

Drawers are an excellent idea!

Drawers/pull out shelves I mean

We have this. It's a great big, deep, useful storage space. We put glass on the shelves so that items can be pulled out and in easier and we obviously store stuff at the back/top that we don't need to access often.

It was bespoke, made by a joiner but designed by my DH.
